Tire balancing & weights
Friday, July 29, 2005 11:12 AM
Hey everyone, forums great, so I had to join.

Simple question if anyone knows. Recently had tires balanced, all previous balancing weights were on outside of rim. After balancing, everything was ok.

Last week had them balanced and they put the weights on the inside. Still have vibration.
Does anyone know if it makes a difference whether its on the inside or outside?
I would imagine that it doesnt.
BTW, rims are polished aluminum

Thanks for the all the help

weights on the outside are for stock rims... thats when those are used. The stick on weights on the inside are generally for aftermarket wheels so they dont @!#$ up the finish and it just looks better. Maybe a wheel isnt balanced or even possible not put on correctly. Or vibes might have even came from reversed tire tredd but from what im hearing you have stock wheels... my only guess is they are infact miss balanced or a weight fell off or something. Good luck

You have two different types of balancing for wheel . One is dynamic which you can install the weights on the inside and outside of the rim ( factory style on lip ) . The second is a static balance which they install the weights in the center of the rim using sticky back weights . The static balance is trying to balance the inside and outside of the rim and is ususally not as good as the dynamic balancing . Also some machines are not setup for both types of balancing . They may have used a dynamic balance and installed the weights like a static balance .

Having weights on the outside is not just for stock rims or just steel rims for that matter . You can have regular weights for alloys and custom rims . These weights are usually coated with a grey or silver coating and the tabs are a lot bigger so the weight does not clamp against the rim and damage it . Trust me when these weights are on the rim they are secure when installed right and will not fly off when going down the road .

I have these on my car right now and when the car was on the road it had no vibration . Most of the time you have to see if they have the weights for custom and alloy wheels . Most places carry regular and stick on weights .

well people sometimes put them on wrong, ive seen people missing weights before. And i didnt say they were just for looks but i would rather have the weights on the inside then a big clip on my chrome lip...

Add my vote to get them re-balanced. You either lost a weight somehow or they were done incorrectly.

Quick thought- check to make sure your lugnuts are all tight- on aluminum rims you have to re-tighten them after about 20 miles once you've had them off and put them back on.
