Im not a total newb to the car scene( i have worked on cars as a job) but i have newb question about how you turn up the boost on cars. From what i understand if you install an intercooler you will run more boost. is this correct? also i know you can put a bigger downpipe in and youll run more boost as well. what i wanna know is how to some people run 8 psi and can turn it up to 14 psi and then back to 8. Is all you need a boost controller? can you place a boost controller on a car that comes turbo stock (supra, mr2, 300zx) and just turn up the boost. Yes i know you need to retard the timing and adjust your fuel but can you do it anyways? Is there a valve or something to adjust how much boost you run?

An intercooler has nothing to do with turning up boost. Intercoolers cool down the exhaust flow heading towards your throttle body (which is a very good thing).
Putting a bigger down-pipe gives less restriction and more velocity which is good for a turbo setup but there is always too big. If your running around 10 psi, 3" is good, if your around 5 or 6 psi, 2 1/2".

Ding Ding, there ya go. A boost controller explains itself, it controls how much boost you want to run. You can either do it with a manual controller (TurboXS sells one) or you can use an Electronic Boost Controller (I believe Apexi & Greddy sells them).

Not necessarily. Take your car to a dyno when you have the tools to actually adjust your fuel and ignition cause you might not have to retard the timing.

the basic deal is.. a good turbo can produce WAY more boost than is usually needed. based on what i read, the turbo im running at 8psi in my car can produce up to 30psi!! the boost level is controlled by the wastegaste. when an air pressure sensor senses th set pressure limit, exhaust flow is diverted straight into the downpipe instead of through the turbine, preventing the boost level from climbing above the set limit. a boost controller doesnt let the wastegate see all the boost thats being produced, so the turbo actually produces more when it "thinks" its producing less.
