Questions About 1996 Pontiac Sunfire
Wednesday, August 10, 2005 5:48 PM
Whats up everyone. I just bought a 1996 Sunfire for my winter car. I have some questions and if anyone can help out it would be great.

1. Its a 2 door sunfire. Do the two front seats backs lock in position or does it just lock going back and not lock going forwards? I'm not sure if it is broken if it does do this or if it came this way.

2. When I smash on the gas in park it only goes to 4000RPM. Is this normal?

3. My drivers power window does down a bit and stops. Then when I try to go up it moves about 1/2 inch and stops. Then I have to wait about 10 min until it can go up another 1/2 inch. Any light on what is this problem and how to fix it?

Thanks for all of your help guys.

for #1, if you are talking about how the seat slides on its rails, it should lock from spot to spot going toward the front or rear.

#2) when I had an automatic j-body, I had no tach, so I couldn't answer it for sure. Put it in neutral and see where it lets you rev it to. Maybe it has a limiter in park since reverse is the only gear you can go to from there? I have no idea, but check neutral.

#3) I don't know, sounds like the motor is about done, take that to a shop

it should lock from wherever it is now to wherever you want it

ok dont do this. smashing the gas in park is not a good idea. and smashing the gas in neutral is not any better. and a neutral drop is bad too. very bad unless you want to replace your tranny

I have an 03 sunfire. When I want to recline I have to push it backwards with my back to however far I want it cause it's set to move forward. If I wasn't in the seat it would move all the way forward.

Yes, rev cutout is 4000 rpms. Trust me, if you were launching, you wouldn't want to rev any higher unless your tranny is built.

Sounds like your motor is going on your power windows. Go to a junkyard and get a new one.

what's wrong with revving it in neutral and then letting it come back to idle?

Because it can damage the transmission.

I don't mean to sound like an idiot, but, why? No one's ever told me this before... I mean I'm not talking about redlining it in neutral and holding it there, but whats a rev in neutral do to the transmission?

Neutral dropping in both manuals and autos is not good for the transmission. I wouldn't be able to explain exactly how it damages the tranny though.

I'm not talking about that. I said rev it up in neutral and let it come back to idle.

Thanks for the input guys. About the seat. I'm talking about the seat back not the whole seat sliding on the rails. Its locked in the rails but the back locks backwards but moves forwards freely without pressing any buttons. Is this normal or is it broken? Both drivers and passengers sides do it so I think that it is normal. I just want to be sure.

It's not normal. The button on the back of the seat needs to be pulled in order to push it forward freely (to let people in the back seat). they shouldn't just fly forward freely at all times.
