AutoTrans Recalibrator

HOKAY so basically ive been on for a while, still a nub, but i searched and didnt get anything good. I found on the site my 98 2.2L sedan cavy is a 3 speed, and those models are only a 3 speed automatic. Then i found thisand it says its for 4 speeds. I know my car came in a 5 speed manual and now im confused. Is this for my car, and if so, for $35 can i go wrong with it?

a bit confused. fill out your registry. you say you have the 2.2 3 speed yet you know your "car came in a 5 speed manual"??
if your car is an auto 3 speed, then no the B&M Shift Plus will NOT work. furthermore the Shift Plus Only works for autos, it will not work on manuals, thats what short shifters are for same rule applies for the autotrans interceptor. no comapny has yet made a shift improver for the 3 speed. also FYI, please search the forums, others had already posted this type of question.

Riley, you sound a bit confussed and I'll try and help clarify some things.

You have a 3-speed, like you said, but every year for the 3rd generation j-bodies (95+) & every motor (2.2 OHV, 2200, ECOTEC, 2.3 or 2.4 motors) came with either an optional 4-speed transmission (the 4T40E), or a 5-speed transmission. For the 3rd gens, there were 2 types of 5-speeds...1995-1999, they had the Isuzu Transmissions. In 2000, they switched to the Getrag Transmissions.

Also, the only 3rd gens that had the 3-speed automatic were from 95-96 and were only available on the 2.2 OHV motors in those years and not the 2.3 or the 2.4 motors.

The AutoTrans only works on the 4-speeds, not your 3-speed. The 4-speeds use Electronic shifting, the 3-speeds don't. The same goes for the B & M shift plus.

My mistake. For some reason I thought they were from 95-96. I was corrected by a friend, they were available from 95-2002. But I was still correct, only available for the OHV motors only.

Heh...

If your shifter says "PRND21" then you have a three speed automatic, known as a 3T40. It's not electronically controlled... so electronic hacks such as the B&M Shiftplus or Autotrans Interceptor will not work. The other B&M shift improver (vacuum lines) might work, I don't know the 3T40 well enough to say for sure. You could get a drill and bore out the valve body inside the trans, but that's a bit of work.

If your shifter says "PRND321" then you'd have the 4 speed automatic, aka the 4T40E. It's electronically controlled and can be "hacked" using those types of products.
