Whats a better engine to mod the 2.4 or this ecotech engine....its a 2.2 right and how much horsepower does it have?

It sometimes helps to read the Newbies FAQ...

Newbies FAQ wrote:Q: How much Horsepower & Torque does my 3rd gen car have?
1995-97 2.2 OHV - 120 Horsepower / 130 lbs of Torque
1998-2002 2200 OHV - 115 Horsepower / 135 lbs of Torque
1995 2.3 L.O. Quad 4 - 160 Horsepower / 155 lbs of Torque
1996-2002 2.4 TC - 150 Horsepower / 155 lbs of Torque
2002-2005 2.2 ECOTEC - 140 Horsepower / 150 lbs of Torque

Also, it's spelled "ECOTEC" not with an H at the end. Some people will jump down your throat for that around here.

What's a better engine to modify? There is no real answer to that because it's all preference. In my opinion and preference, I'd rather modify an ECOTEC because of a more supported aftermarket, but that's just me. You would have to make that decision on your own by doing your own Research.

i agree with njhk. they catered greatly to the cavalier tuner, in the aug 2004 issue of hci, they also had an article about adding a hahn turbo to the ecotec. they say and i qoute "the ecotec is a perfect tuner engine. theres much support for it. for njhk : can i swap my reg 2.2 sfi engine for an ecotec 2.2.?

The ECOTEC is a great tuner engine, yes but their computer are the pitts (especially the 04 & 05 computers). We need more help with tuning abilities to compliment the engine modifications.

LOL once again...it helps to read the Newbies FAQ

You would need the transmission because the one from the 2200 will not work
on the ECOTEC motor, you will need the ECU, motor mounts (get aftermarket
ones), tranny mounts (if it's a manual, get aftermarket ones), you will need
to either buy an aftermarket header or take the header off that car because
the ECOTECs header is in the back of the motor & the 2200s is in the front
(also they will not fit each other...2 different types of ports), the
ignition system (the 2200 uses spark plug wires, ECOs use a distributor), &
the fuel system.

Take it from me... I have the 2.4l LD9 engine in my 99 Z24... I would trade for an Ecotec ANY DAY.

But seriously, ECO all the way man.

As NJHK entioned, the computers are constantly on the fritz, for example the number of people who have swapped cams into the ECO and it immediately throws codes, whereas fewer people with the 2.4 LD9 have that happen.

But think about it... bolt-ons are abundant, turbo kits flyin' around everywhere, even engine internals are supported well...

Ecotec.

most likely you'd be better of just buying a cavalier with the eco already in it.

Very true. Some throw codes, others run very rich on cam swaps. The 04+ guys have a terrible time with boost cause their computers want to bring their a/f ratio back to the stock a/f ratio no matter what they do to their fuel system.
