My newbie question, secret cams

Ok I was gonna post this in the performance forum but said, hey newb this is a newb question that might get answered in the newb forum instead of possibly flamed here.

allright, i really want to get this done. I have an oil consumptiom issue right now that i have yet to fully diagnose, it is not that serious as of yet but due to my driving so many miles for work it is exaggerated and henceforth going to get worse faster than say the guy down the street. this weekend i am checking my compression to see where i stand, and hope it is just old rings. when i fix this problem i want to stick in the "secret " cams for a little extra pop, and possibly up the compression for now since boost is out of the question for a while. what i don't understand from reading all this stuff everyone has written down is what is necessity, and what is gratiutous upgrade? i may be able to get my hands on a long term loaner so all this won't matter and i can spend more time on it, but if not i want to be able to knock this out fairly quick.

i will be replacing gaskets and what not so not worried there

Timing gears/sets? just a good idea/ insurance

water pump? might as well i guess since its open, would be pissed to have to do it again some time soon

new lifters required? i'm thinking yes but will stock replacements be ok or am i way off, i would like the lifters from JBP but don't see that as an option right now.

valves? would probably go for the comp valves from Karo, but not necessary right

Springs? from what i understand these need to be replaced and the ones from a 2.3 won't woork due to ?seat size?

i know this gets asked all the time but for some reason i am dumb to this and need somebody to "dumb it down a little more" for me. basicly what is absolute necessity, what is just plain a good idea without going overboard, and what will make my credit cards cry.

Thanks ahead everyone

Technically, you don't have to replace anything when you upgrade your camshafts.

If they are worn or have alot of miles on them, replace them with either OEM or aftermarket.

Both aren't necessary but if you want to replace them, you can.

I've heard of the springs from the 2.3 being able to fit in the 2.4. But I'm unsure as to how it can be made to work.

Speedracerz is the guy to talk to about this though, here's a link to him he's got the 2.3 springs in the ld9

Also depending on how worn your lifters are, you should replace them

I put my cams in at about 42k miles and I'm now sitting at 44k miles, didn't replace anything when I put them in, the cams just went right in with stock lifters.

The problem being that if your lfiters are overly worn, the old cams would have left their "fingerprint" so to speak, on the lifter, causing excessive lifter noise and might make for a few other issues down the road.

As to knocking it out quickly? have fun. took me and JBO Dave about 7 hours to do the cams. it would have taken less if we didn't make 2 trips to the autostore. The waterpump is in such an akward position that the only way I can see getting it off is to remove the header. I was tempted to remove my water pump when I was doing my cams but realized that there is 1 out of 3 bolts that is damn near impossible to get to, and it's very close to the exhaust manifold.

Have fun. good luck. Don't lose anything.

that's all.

thanks guys, by knocking it out quickly i meant In a weekend or 2, don't wanna rush anything if I can get my hands on another car to drive for a week or 2 in case i run into issues. plus will probably be more than cams done anyways.

basicly this weekend I need to check compression and see if my oil is getting by some worn old rings, i have a slight leak through one of the cam tower seals but that should not be letting any oil into the CC. So once i find out what has to be done to fix it I will go from there. If the rings need to go I would like to go ahead and up the compression while I'm in there along with swapping cams out, if I have the time (i.e. loaner car available) then I want to tear down the head and clean it up real good and smooth it out inside.

just trying to see where i'm standing before I go out and spend money I don't need to now but do things right without screwing myself over by overlooking something.

after i go through and get my taxes ready and done this weekend I will be back to boning up on this info.

any other ideas on my oil issue are welcome
