Like a true newbie I bought some $120 springs off ebay and put them on which dropped front and back 1.8". Handling was definitely better, way less body roll, however the ride is pretty rough. I'm pretty sure that something is blown as I have the original suspension system at 110,000 miles. I'm looking to remedy this situation, however do not want to spend much over $600 replacing my suspension system.
YES I have read the FAQ and done research, but there's so much information it's very hard to choose and many conflicting posts. I would like some suggestions on best bang for your buck. If I can't afford to lower my car for that amount then so be it but I would like decent handling and smooth ride.
Jeff
putting cheap junk on parts that aren't supposed to handle that kind of use is a sure way to break something and end up costing you way more. you've probably blown a strut.
since you said you've read the suspension FAQ, you should know that if you want to lower your car the right way, you need aftermarket struts, and to stay away from cheap junk sold on ebay.
for $600 you might be able to get some used aftermarket Koni struts, possibly with springs... but i kinda doubt it. save up some more money and get some quality parts.
Your stock struts weren't designed to be dropped, that's why it's a rough ride.
Do what Cannon Fodder said.

if you keep those springs you need either koni yellows or dspecs. dont be cheap on suspension parts

what he said. dont be cheap when modding your car. or you will cheap results and quality.
Koni Yellows or Dspec sturts will be good with those springs

X3 don;t be cheep on mods. save your money up and buy good, quality products. you'll be much happier w/ the better performance and looks. a few quality parts is better then all the cheap ebay junk combined. been there done that
People say that what doesn't kill you in this life
will make you stronger. I'm not sure if that is true
or not, but i do know one thing-You have to learn from
it and it has to make you better.......it has to.......
the best thing to do, is get a set of D-specs asap. $530 shipped, fully adjustable, and a direct bolton.
Koni's are nice also, but you have to mod the stock struts to fit the Koni's, and im doubting you wanna go thru that
Thanks for all the info
Jeff

to me its sounds like your saying you have to modify the stock struts to get the koni yellow struts to fit.
Its still a replacement I dont know if you have to modify anything or not but the stock strut comes off.

to make Konis fit, youd have to cut the front stock strut to a certain length.

Ok I dont know much about suspension, but I do know that the strut comes off. Soooo what is it that gets cut? The strut? Or the hat or bumpstop?

yea ur not the only one man im not understanding eitheR? I was just gonna get some koni yellows to but if theirs work to get them to work then mayb i'll go a different route.
the fronts are an insert. kind of like the top engine mount of a 2.4
the rears are a direct replacement

because on the koni's the front struts that you buy are just the strut tube, to attach it to the car you need the part at the bottom of the stock struts where they attach to the wheel hub, you hack that part off of the stock struts, and slip the koni strut into the part of the stock strut.
basically, your using a peice of the stock strut as a bracket for the koni struts.
personally that makes me hate koni.....i mean, theyre the most expensive struts for a J body, and theyre not even complete. to me thats bad business, but the struts are awsome
