hi i am new to this forum. i just got a 99 cavalier this past week and i love it. its 100% basic just the way i like it. 5 spd, 2200, unpainted bumpers, only 3 gauge cluster, no a/c, i love it. well anyways. i had a 95 retta with a 2.2 auto before, and now i gots this.ive noticed its got a lot more power and torque compared to it. but i still want that extra kick in the @$$ when i want it. i was looking at the hahn kits, the stage 1 and 2. the only difference to me seemed to me the wastegate and intercooler on the 2nd stage. and if im not mistaking (i am somewhat new to cars) a boost controller will up the boost and an intercooler is not $1000. so is it worth it to try the 1st with extra parts, or just go with the 2nd? im sure you'll say that i newb shouldnt touch a turbo, but im not an idiot. ive worked on my buddies dsm for a year now and i seem to be fine with it. so i think a weekend and a few friends could have it up and going. any opinions? thanx for the help
Well the differences would be:
Addition of an intercooler with specially routed intercooler piping
Higher set wastegate PSI (the higher amount of boost isn't done by a boost controller in this case).
Now you have to realize that the $1000 isn't just parts...but it goes towards profit and R & D. It's not easy to have a specially mapped out front mount intercooler setup.
I would say yes, go with the Stage 2. Having an intercooler is very important. You need a way to cool down the compressed air...if you don't, it could lead to heat soaking and overheating of the motor or even worse, internal damage over a period of time. Not to mention, it could reduce performance because of it being so hot.
Anymore questions?

thanx for not flamming me. i hate that. ok i do have another q though. i dont have the money to just throw down $3000 for it. but on sport compact pro, where i found it at, they have this "payment" thing. it says $3000 or $160 per month. it says no interent or cradit cards. is theat legit? has anyone used that? cause if not i cant get the kit anyways. which really blows cause i wont to get some balls out of this thing

No problem, this is the Newbies forum....I don't flame anyone here.
As far as that goes, I've come to realize that you want to keep yourself out of debt as much as possible. What happends is you do this payment plan and then you want something and then your money priorities split up and you buy something else instead of putting down more money torwards the payment plan (over the interest rate). It just turns into a long long process of debt. If it's legal or legit, I still wouldn't do it. Trust me, you don't want to owe anyone $3000, especially some type of creditor.

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
yeah that was kinda what i was thinking too. but something i did get thinking of today was nitrous. i would pay a 3rd compared to the turbo but i could get about the same gain in power. what would i have to do with the car for say 75 shot. i dont want to rebuild it like a race car or anything. but lets say i would put a set of nice injectors, the compression checked out ok, and i set it up "externally" for nitrous. what would be the best shot to run. a gool balance in power and reliability. i know it will bring the reliability down no matter what, but i dont want to run it one summer and it blow.
i ran a 50 shot most of last year. 75 shot here and there. and ended the season with a 35.
all i have is the kit, colder plugs, and premium gas

so a if i got a wet 75 shot and injectors it would be just fine. or do you think i shold get an assortment of jets and chane them when i really plan on using it? how hard are they to change? if i do that, i plan on getting air/ fuel and a nitrous psi gauge, obviously. well thnx a million for your help guys, its nice to have a forum that doesnt flam people for asking q's they dont know. any suggestions are greatly appreciated

Actually that's not entirely ture.
Yes, you would INITIALLY pay a 3rd of a what a turbo kit would cost, but nitrous re-fills aren't cheap. A good amount of 75 shots make your tank empty quick. Your average cost for a refill is $40. So say you spend $40 a week (52 weeks in a year), that's about $2,080 you will spend each year you have it...this is assuming you don't get multiple re-fills. Gonna spend alot of money on temporary power that you have to be selective.
Trust me, alot of people who have nitrous get pissed off and eventually go boost...power at your feet

Make sure you understand you don't want a basic a/f ratio gauge (narrowband), you want a Wideband unit that will tell you exactly what ratio you're running.
Check out www.zeitronix.com, that's the one I have.

You're welcome...anytime.
I will say this though...
Nitrous setups always seemed unattractive to me because they aren't street legal and it's temporary power. I think being that I'm mainly a street car and don't race at the track, that would piss me off and being a slow car untill I started spraying would piss me off as well lol
To each is own. Good luck.

lol I agree, but Also like the idea of nitrous only becuase i would use it at the track for fun and my car is quick enough for me for the street. but is different for everyone.
This will sound silly to most if not all, but i love the sound of a Turbo almost more than just the power output you get from them, I got hooked when my friend took me for a ride in his eclipse GST before i could even drive, I Love that sound always will, even if it makes the car less reliable and cost's people a arm and a leg
