do I need a new valve cover gasket if I take it out to paint? what are other parts I can take out
without needing a new gasket? (and that are fairly simple, so no taking the whole engine out for paint
)
well if you take your valve cover off, you could replace it..ive taken mine off for cleaning mostly and my gasket was fine to put back in. Indeed some will flare saying omfg donot use the old one but if its fine not leaking/broken who cares.
nah, its fine. i took mine off a few times and its just fine, its a rubberish gasket

I've had mine off to polish the valve cover like 3 times now and its just as good as the day Chevy put it together on the line. Go ahead re-use it it won't leak ( unless you ef something up that is
) And let who ever wants to flame to go right ahead since I've done this for going on 3 years now with zero issues.

ok, thanks alot for the help. now, what are some other parts that are fairly easy to take outand put back in without needing a new gasket?
Most of the top end can be taken off without needing new gaskets (obviously not the head). All depends on what you're willing to take a part.
You can reuse your exhaust manifold gasket, if you wanted to paint your manifold (use very high temp paint)
ZOMG dont reuse gaskets the wheel hub will seize!!! ok somone had to do it...off topic but you guys like rubber or cork gaskets? i always beena fan of cork for some reason it intrests me
