hey im very much into cars and no about chevy preformance i have owned 2 camaros and a firebird all with v8s. Im looking into gettin into fuel injected prefomance and i realy like the style of the 95+ cavy's the problem is i dont know the diffrcne in the motors i understand that they come wiht a 2.2 ecotec motor and the older ones ahve 2.3 and 2.4 ..... i was wondering does ecotec stand for anything or is it just the name of the engine. I was also wondering which motors are stronger and better for upgrades i plan on runnign boost so does any motor handel boost better i would imagine that the ecotec 2.2 are more advance engines but for my own experince building motors bigger is usaly better.... well any comments or suggstions would hlep out alot in my searhc for my j-body thanks for the help.
If your considering boost I would recommend finding a 2.2 Eco.
^^ i agree...the eco is probably gonna be the best engine to handle boost..the 2.3 is better for a N/A build and the 2.4..well.. there is a supercharger kit for it
The ECO would deff be the way to go.
Semper Fi SAINT. May you rest in peace.
If you want the easy route go 2.2L, if you want the harder route go 2.4L. Both are good engines it is just that the Eco has more parts. That is all.
Personally I rather go 2.4L.

make sure u dont confuse it with the OHV though, its also a 2.2. the engine you want is only available in 03 and up cavs. and certain 02 models, make sure it says "ecotec" on the engine. NOT 2200.
hey! whats wrong with the 2200...
no love lolol

thanks for the help guys comments are alot of help if you have anymore keep them comming but for now my hunt for my cavy begins the comments realy help im gunna try to get an ecotec and save till i can afford one.
2.4 rock! eco sounds to environmently friendly and pussy sounding. plus 200 extra cc's you cant go wrong1
1: what are the hp & tq #'s on the 2.2 eco and the 2.4?
2: are the 2.4's ecotec?
3: is ecotec just a name for the motor or is it like VTEC? (Variable valve Timing with Electronic lift Control)
4: How hard would it be to swap a 2.2eco into a '99 RS and would i have to get a tranny to match? (or could I mate it with the 2200's?)
Sorry for jacking your thread.
lol its all good the more questions the more info i get and you cna never know to much...... i not totaly sure on this but form my impression ecotec is like vtec now i know a good amount about hondas and vtec you can tune and get a vtec control timer becasue vtec kicks in at certain rpm if an ecotec motor is like vtech does any one know if there is a way to time it to kick in sooner?

1.
2.4 TC - 150@5600 Horsepower / 155@2400-4400 lbs of Torque
2.2 ECOTEC - 140@5600 Horsepower / 150@4000 lbs of Torque
2.
The ones in the Js...no.
3.
Ecotec is a marketing name. But there is a VVT in the 2.4L Ecotec, that was not found in the J.
4.
Somebody else that has had expiriance can better address this one.

a common misconception people have about vtec is that the sooner you have it kick the faster your car will go, BUT, if your vtec motor is stock, vtec is already tuned to kick at that specific rpm where the small cam lobe starts losing power. Think of it as shifting gears too early, the next gear is going to be bogged down if you shift at 5,000rpms instead of 8,200.
I always thought the Ecotec was GM's competition for the VTEC. But what everyone has said is correct. I have a 02 Z24 and I have found it a little tough to find performance parts for a reasonable price. Definetly go with an Ecotec.
2.4L here ...... I wish I had the $$$ and time to put into it. All my $$ is going towards my 5.0L stang.

haha, only kidding..
Some Eco's have been know to waste stangs'

I love my 2.2L ecotec. Basically all stock motor, with the exception of the CAI. With that the only thing I have done to the performance of mine I can easily see where SiLvEr StRiPeY 04 is coming from.
from my understanding, ecotec is just a name(ECOnomic TEChnology) and in no way compares to the functionality of a VTEC. i've owned 2.2L ecotec, 2200 and 2.4L twincam. i prefer the twincam over all. don't get me wrong, the ecotec is nice. but i didn't like the driviblity of it. seemed too electronicly controled. and i'm not gonna knock the 2200, but it's weak.

boobs now with Riboflabin"
PFT I no longer bother with mere piddley V-6 Mustangs as they are not worth my gas! Ok now that my ego trip is over my 2.2 ECO runs 14.8's and still gets 40+ mpg with power everything and a sunroof and A/C still in the car.
Sure I could go fatser but the car wouldn't be as comfortable and since I'm older I WANT MY COMFORTS !!!
Someone on here a while back was selling the 2.4 ECO VVT engines pretty cheap. All you should need to do is swap the 2.4's head with a 2.2's and from what I believe Scarab was saying it will yield an almost 11 to 1 compression engine. ( or there abouts ) That should put you into almost the 200 hp range seeing how a bone stock 2.4 is running around 180 to 190. True your loseing the VVT but your gaining compression and compression = more HP.
If it were me and if I didn't have a wife and all the crap I do I'd build a 2.4 with a 2.2's head and lower compression pistons and slap on the GM supercharger. Or since I'd already done all that other work I'd probly slap a turbo and a front mount on it and call it a day. You'd be in the mid to high 200 hp range then and with some tweeking you should be able to get into the 3 easily. Ok sure it'll be expensive but an 11 sec Cavi just sounds cool!

Andy Lee actually and this is just me , the ecotec is kind of weak as well the automatics tend to have a bog or at least mine does. As soon as i hit 40 mph the tach drops way off and the engine feels like it's bogging bigtime.
The ECO is the 3rd Generation of the Quad Family, although GM will not admit it.
The original was the 2.3 Quad4 developed by Olds in 1987. It was refined in 95 (or 96 depending on model) to the 2.4 TwinCam.
Several part are interchangable between these two, not everything, but quite a bit.
Then when GM shutdown Olds they transfered the design to Opel. They developed the "new" EcoTec line.
While none of the parts are interchangable, if you hold two similar function parts next to each other you can see they look strikingly similar. The EcoTec line is available in 1.8L (Europe only AFAIK), 2.0L Supercharged and Turbo Chared versions, 2.2L NA, and the 2.4L VVT (variable valve timing). I've been told they all share a common block with different strokes to get the different displacements, but I've only ever seen a 2.2L IRL.
The 2200 2.2L and 2.2 OHC are gutless crap engines with quite a few common problems. The 2200 being a newer gen of the 2.2OHC. I really don't know why they kept making it after the 2.4 TC was released. That's GM for you though.

there is way more after market for a 2.4 than an eco. and cheaper to build if you know what you're doing. but they're both great motors.
