Currently my wife has a '99 with the 2200. I'm totally new with cavaliers (I'm a Honda guy) and even more lost with their motors.
Anyway, I'm curious as to how many motors and there are for cav's and their general specs, like HP and TQ #'s and what i can fit into this car without re-doing the whole front-end.

Also want to know about the heads on the motors. Are the 2.4 and 2.2 eco DOHC? And is ecotec just a name for the motor or is it like VTEC? (mechanical system that alters the and valve timing mid range)
2.2 OHV HP: 120 TQ: 130 // 2200 HP: 115 TQ: 135
2.4 LD9 HP: 150 TQ: 155
2.2 Ecotec HP: 140 TQ: 150
The third gens have come with 2.2/2200 ohv engines, the 2.3 LO quad 4, and 2.4 and 2.2 dohc engines. 99 and below had Isuzu transmissions w/different bellhousings depending on engine and 2000 and up come with the Getrag transmissions for 5spd cars. Automatics came with either a 3spd or 4spd electronic overdrive transmission.
Swapping to the 2.4 or 2.2 eco will require swappings trannys also including fabbing up new trans mount as well as the wiring. AFAIK I don't think anyone has done the 2.4 eco swap.
Ecotec means, um, hell I don't know! But it doesn't have anything to do with variable valve timing.
ok thanks, that's what i was looking for. So i guess ecotec is like Ford's "Ztec", does nothing, just sounds like VTEC so younger people would be more attacted to it.

u also have the option of the 2.3L High Output and W41 quad4 engines 180 and 190 hp ..bolts right up to Jbody mounts and is compatible with isuzu and getrag transmissions..all youll need to make it work is the pcm and engine bay wiring from a 95 Z or GT jbody

Mia some of us are getting our feet wet with the 3.4 v6 H.O. out of grand am GT's
The 3.1's are basically the same, but why The 3.4 is 175 hp with no mods.
there are some bugs to work out for mounts and wiring but i think it will be worth it. Check out the third gen forum for our progress.

well i only felt like mentioning the engines that bolted in...other than that it comes down to whatever you want..ofcourse theres the 3400 and the 3800 but others have gotten a 350v8 in there ...thats why i only mentioned Jbody engines
