DRIFT RACING WITH FWD CARS.

I don't remember pretty well, but somewhere I found that it was only safe for AWD cars to drift. I'm not asking this because I wanna do it by the way, someone just told me that he could drift using the e-brake.

AWD cars only? Tell that to to the all the cars on the D-1 tour! Or most anyway. RWD is the way to go. FWD's can do slides useing the E-brake but its not really what I'd call drifting. More like and E-brake slide.

the true definition of a drift is a controlled loss of control, and it's traditionally done with RWD vehicles.

in a FWD car, it's called a powerslide...AWD just doesn't drift(it basically stays glued to the track) unless you REALLY know what you're doing, or you are REALLY out of control.

Sticking true to what "drifting" is, you cannot do it with a FWD car, or an AWD car...

If you ever drifted with a RWD car, you'd know what I mean. You use the slipping of the rear tires to control how far out your back end goes, and to keep momentum in a certain direction, you simply can't do this with a FWD car since it will pull you out of the slide. AWD cars can't drift because of the same concept, the front drive pulls them out of a skid.

You can drift an AWD car but it takes some extra talent and a little modification to the driveline. There's a few showing up here and there on the drift scene with variable center diffs or whatever it is, they somehow divert more power to the rear wheels tather than to the front. The front still gets power but not enough to pull the car out of a drift, but it helps them get a deeper angle because if things go too far the front can still pull it back in. Some of the D1 drivers are running Skylines now but I think they've converted to rear drive only.

There is a STI in Winnipeg here, that drifts. He tells me that the power transfer is 60 rear, 40 front, and it's enough to allow him to drift with sticky front tires, and crappy rear ones.

that's stock on the STi - there is a button in the cockpit that allows the driver to change diff settings. it's pretty cool.

Lol... It's almost hard to believe it's goth. I keep hearing stuff off the Dark LIght album on the radio. Fukkers.

Back to the topic. There's a thread about this here:

It's an okay read.

uh

drifting's been around longer than you've been alive...and the Japanese always take awhile sending their stuff our way. don't blame a movie.

Uh, yeah. Um, drifting has been a part of racing for decades. Japanese racers didn't invent it, they simply took a technique and turned it into one hell of an art form. It's been around since the day of the Minis and the old Datsun 510s and even before that. Japanese racers make it look pretty, I gotta hand it to 'em.

Although, I will admit this new movie doesn't bode well. Look at what happened after the first movie. Every ricer that saw the movie suddenly thought nitrous was rocket fuel and it was cool to drop two grand for a death wish on wheels. Whoever said "bad things come in three's" should have kept their mouth shut. The first movie was bad enough we didn't need another two.

the Initial D fanbois already went nuts on the import RWD vehicles...try finding an 85 or 86 Corolla GT-S for less than $2k. i guarantee it'll be rusted out, or in horrible shape mechanically.

and yes, i agree that the Japanese didn't fully invent it...but they're known for making it what it is(essentially what you said). i am, however, amused that the US already has a few VERY capable drifters, who are doing better than some of the Japanese racers.

Yeah, it kind of surprised me too. Falken has done a really nice job of putting together a team of capable drivers. And Rhys Millen has got to be one of the best I've seen. It's really amazing. The Japanese drivers are still pretty incredible, though. Watching some of these guys run Time Attack courses is like nothing I've ever seen, and then they turn around and run drift circuits, and their technique completely changes.

thats what I love about the "tuner" sub culture. everyone loves to hate on what they know nothing about. drifting has been around way before the first TFATF came out. it was just under ground on japansese streets. but as soon as it hits mainstream, your not "cool" unless you hate it. most have no clue why they just know they have to keep there image.....Preaping for the nu-uh come backs.

BTW those corollas have alot more to them then people know. apparently the AGE motors (I think thats what they are) are intersting specimens. there very far ahead of there time (which puts them right about here and now). the cars are apparently un belivable hard to drive. and supposedly if you can master them there not only drift terrors, but track monsters. there deffintly up there on one of the cars I would love to work on.

yes, the 4AGE is known for taking a beating and loving it...and if tuned for n/a, MYGOD can you get gobs of power out of them(for a little car). i honestly regret getting rid of mine...but it would be impossible to find another one in that kind of condition for that cheap.

now, as far as the car being difficult to drive...it's not hard to DRIVE, per se. it's hard to drift. it's so well balanced that, as you said, it takes a lot of skill to drift them.

in fact, the Drift Bible even says that out of the various "drift cars" they mention, the 240 is the easiest to drift while the AE86 is one of the hardest. 240s tend to drift disgustingly easily.
