Help - High pitch sound - Sunbird Turbo
Wednesday, May 24, 2006 9:46 AM
Sometimes i get a really high pitch sounds coming from the engine. Seems to me like some kind of air is leaking. Intake gasket? Or exaust gasket? Or something else? Is there something i can do to pinpoint this problem? Another thing, the car runs awesome but if i redline it or push it too hard it starts to studder and runs like crap for 5 - 10secs. What could that be? Thanks!

Does the car have a waste gate?

Well the car runs awesome, and wouldn't a vaccum leak make it run rich? Because it's awesome on gas. And as for the wastegate, it has the stock T25 turbo so you tell me. lol.

Are you sure the high-pitched sound isn't just your turbo spooling?
When it starts to run like crap after running hard does the check engine light come on and then go off when it runs fine again? If so this is your fuel cut for over-boost... a MAP bleed can fix it. Look in the boost forum for that.

Terry.. shame on your for asking that question..... It's like if I asked you if your car has pistons (and you WEREN'T driving an RX7) and you had no idea about cars. Don't do those kinda things to the new guys just to confuse them!

Well engines aren't exactly my week point, i'm just still learning about turbo systems. The only other turbo car i had was a 86 VW jetta turbo diesel lol. And i did find that question quite odd. Ok it starts to run like crap at 4500RPM and studders for about a second when i shift gears. As for the check engine light, it doesn't come on when it does that, and i know it works. So ya, not to sure what to try next. What exactly is a MAP bleed?

Got one more question. I had a timing belt isue a couple days ago (skipped 3 knotches) so i changed it and at the same time checked the plugs. And they were really black. I also had to cut out the cat cuz it was plugged. Whould that do it? If not what would? Thanks!

Josh sorry couldn't resist! IF your cat was clogged or mostly clogged then the exhaust couldn't get out like it was ment to so it would have to find someplace else to go. If its still makeing the high pitched sound check around and see if the clogged cat blew an exhaust gasket out somewhere. Really black usually means realy rich
and if the exhaust couldn't get out but the fuel was spraying in it would make sence.

Hows the car running now?

Loud! Thats how its running.. lol. Well i don't seem to get that high pitch sound anymore but i think its cuz i can't get into the high revs. Put i remember that when it did squeel like that, it wouldn't pull as much so i'm pretty sure its turbo related. But right now the studdering is my main concern. I went out last night and i noticed that even under light accel it'll studder at a high rev... not sure whats going on. Any other things i could try or check. Next i think i'll change the intake and exaust gaskets.

If it sounds like a belt squeal then I would check your timing belt again. Did the problem start after your timing belt problem?

Actualy now that you mention it, it hasn't squeeled since i changed the timing belt. But i was pocking around and trying to figure out what was going on. I pulled a couple plugs and they look normal. It still studders but doesn't squeel and the turbo spools up qick and seems normal. But i am wondering is if its fuel delivery related? Just a guess but maybe it can't supply enough fuel for all the air being crammed in at 5000 rpm? Maybe a bottle of injector cleaner and a new fuel filter?? Running out of ideas here... Maybe i can get a in car vid to show you all what its doing, if that'll help.

If the cat was clogged shut no wonder your turbo wouldn't spool up, no where for the exhaust gases to go.

Alright but now why does it studder?

I'm siding with the plugged exhaust. that would cause high RPM problems and it would make a whirling or a whistle sound because the air flow through an orfice too small. Does it sound like its a whirling sound?

The exhaust isn't pluged anymore. I cut the cat out and i have a glasspack at the end. It doesn't make that sound anymore. Just studders at high revs..
