J-Body Newb with some questions about air flow
Thursday, July 06, 2006 9:25 PM
ok so i just bought an '05 caviler with the ecotec. automatic, coupe. couple of questions

first the car came with a ram air hood. (RK Sports i think). how ever the previous owner did not mod the stock air box to accept the ram air. do i just need to cut the top out of the air box to accomidate the ram air hood or is there a kit i need to purchase? i seriouly doubt i'll gain anything from the ram air hood, but i don't like to have things on my cars that "are just for looks" if they are suppose to be functional.

secondly i would like let this little ecotec breathe better. what would the all knowledgeable j-body gurus recomend? i want to keep the mods simple and naturaly aspirated for now. i was thinking headers, cat and exaust. but i still have to pass emissions tests, keep the car as a daily driver, and the exaust can't be of the annoying ricer type.

well for what ever reason you have me intriuged.

if im not mistaken, the rk hood is down the center (correct?) which means thatis sitting right over the engine. theres no way your going to get a induction unit over there. plus, even if you did, the unit ( hahah unit) would be so heat soaked by the time it hit your box (haha box im on a roll) it would either not help, or be detremental.

as for the second Q. that might just be the most asked q on hear (next to why I can go over 108) its in the faq, and every where. intake exhuast header....blah blah blah. Im sure you already know the basics its real simple. the car needs air you can supply it with as much fuel as it needs, and your heat is always there, so that just leave air to give you a bigger bang in the fire triangle department (your engine). Ill tell you right now though, dont expect to much with an na app. the heavist NA modders on hear are barely into the 13's with an na app.

my advice. the basic mods, then just go bottle. its power on tap. its easy to hook up. its cheap. you can pass emsiisons. you dont really need to tune it. its every thing its cracked up to be and more.

have fun.

yeah it's in the center but has the built in duct over to the right side. i realize it won't make any diffrence for power, i just bugs me not being finished.

i don't expect much with this engine. it's going to be my daily driver. i plan on keeping the mods very simple. i was just wondering who makes the best headers and exaust for j-bodies. my last little car was a 89 honda civic hatch back, and i went all greaddy with it.

as far as bottle feeding this dude, i'm kinda iffy about putting a go button in the cavi, this car has to run like a top every day for the next few years, so i don't want to put something in that i could possibly burn out my engine with. if i do decide to bottle feed it will be small shot.

Add an after market Intake, Aem, Rksport, Weapon R (yuck, i have one and i wnat my Rk back on), Injen, etc; THen you wont hav ean airbox and any air coming in from the hood (if any) will go right in the filter element.

my ram air hood was like that. it was a full functional hood that had a little duct that went off to the right side. i simply just cut the top of the stock intake box off and added mesh to the box so nothing would get in there.

ßãggéÐÇåv98 did you add a rubber seat for the hood to mate up with the air box?

well me a couple of buddies are headed out to the track wednessday. figured i'd get some times with the stock setup before i do any mods. not that cutting open the top of my air box is going to give me any gains.

also i am fairly ceartin the track is 1/8th mile. it's been a coulpe of years since i've been out there so i could be worng.

Do not listen to Scorpio1, do not buy the name. An intake is an intake, do not mistake that one. Why the hell would anyone buy a piece of metal tubing for anything over $20-$30 is beyond me. Go to E-bay and buy any CAI or WAI you find and slap that mother in there. I put mine on and got 10-15 horses added. That easy. Yeah you can jpay the $300 for an AEM, or other name, when you get done to it, it is a piece of bent metal tubing and nothing more. So why buy the name brand?

even better. the cheaper the intake the more money there is for something else cool . next step i think would be headers and a full exhaust. loudness in the engine will increase once you open up the exhaust, but if you put the rite muffler on, it wont sound ricey at all. i believe its dynomax that sells a muffler that isn't much louder than stock, but will outperform almost any other. or something like that. they flow good is all i kno, lol. i think its the ultraflo SS muffler thats the quietest they sell. ive heard its not loud really at all untill you lay on the gas, and get a nice, not blaringly loud tone. go with 2.25" piping and a highflow cat and youve got yourself a real good begining to a good car

good luck man.

much thanks for the infor Jon DeVincenzo. i'll check out the dynomax. i have to drive this dude day in and day out so i don't really want a super loud exaust, unless i really get on the gas that is

anyone know of a high flo cat that will pass emissions tests?

well the trip to the track got cancelled so we went ahead and cut the top of of the air box. man what a diffrence. the engine breaths much better already. can't wait until i get my exaust system. the little ecotec no longer bogs down when you really get on the gas. pulls nice and even through out the rpm range. i wouldn't say it's any faster, but a definate diffrence indeed. besides the engine has a really nice sound about in the 3500 - 4500 rpm range now.

Jon DeVincenzo i'll check out gravanatuning.com thanks agian huge help.
