Looking for Help with Engine Swap
Wednesday, August 23, 2006 9:51 AM
First let me start off by saying Hello to all...We have been reading your posts and getting lots of great info from this site for a while but now we are seeking some specific help.
The car is a 98 Sunfire, 2.4, 5-speed that has spun a rod bearing. At least thats what I suspect it to be.
He purchased a used 2.4 Twin Cam that was pulled out of a 99 Alero.
My question is: Is this engine compatable for his car? It looks the same physically but some local mechanics have told him it is not compatable and probably won't work. They gave him some reasons like the sensors, knock, crank, etc may not be the same or maybe not located in the same place.
Is this correct? The engine came complete with the exceptions of the bolt ons, alternator, starter, A/C and it does have the wiring harness, at least from the firewall to the engine anyway.
So can we make it work? If it is not directly compatable could we get an Alero Computer to make it work?
He is desperate to get it running again so we need your expert help as I would trust the info I get from you guys more than what we are getting from these so called mechanics.
Thanks!!!

search more man..it will def. work the mechanics are idiots
i just put a 2001 grand am engine in my 96 cav

Swap upper mount from old engine to new one.. as well as the exhaust manifold
Take your fuel rail off before you do the swap and leave it hanging with your injectors.. youll need to use your old injectors.
As for the knock sensor the 99 will probably be a bit different i think the threa was 12x1.25 on mine if i remember right i had to tap it out to that size and use the old knock sensor
crank sensor is unchanged

email me if you need any help i just did this like 2 weeks ago

Jonathan, thanks for taking the time to reply - I had already decided that the local Mechs were idiots, well maybe idiots is a little strong but they are so narrow minded that they are either unable or unwilling to research it which is why I came here to the people that REALLY KNOW what is going on....
the tip on the knock sensor and the fuel rail/injectors is good so Thanks for that bit of info also.
I will try not to be a pain but I may have to take you up on your offer to contact you in case I run into something else....

The 2.4 core engine is EXACTLY the same. There are some external differences (like intake manifold routing and various tubes) but still very close even then.

OK Guys..thanks for the replys....I understand now with your help that all I'd need to do is use my old one wire knock sensor, old fuel rail/injectors and don't worry about the EGR....but I don't want to live with EGR/1404 code.
Since I was lucky enough to get an engine complete with fuel rail & injectors as well as a good engine to bulkhead wire harness I was thinking I would go another route and replace the ECU with one from a 99 or maybe flash mine...how much would I expect to pay for a reflash?
Or would it be better to go salvage and get one that way? Possible conficts/problems with this idea...
Feedback appreciated.....

Ah, good points...figured there might be other issues to deal with, don't want this to turn into monster garage..looks like I'm back to the original plan..seems like the easiest/quickest solution. May just install a toggle switch to kill the CEL.
