Tomorrow I'm going to check out an '01 coupe, M5, with 160k miles. He says they are all highway, but that still seems to be alot for an '01. From what I can tell in the pics it looks to be in great shape.
So, is there anything specifically I should check out? I've never had a car this new, with that many miles, so thats why I am concerned.
P.S. He asking $2000 for it, that pretty fair, right?
What engine and does it make any grinding, whining, or other stange noises while at freeway speeds.
Its a 2.2, and I'll check those when I test drive it.
one thing i've learned. as soon as you get there (or 10 minutes before if you've got a cell phone), have him start it up. talk to him for a while and let the car get to normal temp BEFORE the test drive. then beat the hell out of it. most cars won't over heat in a 10 minute test drive, but if they're already at running temp when the drive starts, its more likely to show its faults.
GO PATS!!!
yea their are problems to check for if possible ask if you can take it to your local mechanic and have him run a diagnosic it may be 30 - 60 bucks but not a bad price to pay if you really really what the car......this is more common with the z24 model but the number three bearing seems to wanna spin out along with the water pump tends to go to @!#$ on occasion to so have them check for that......
Find out if it's had a head gasket, alternator, and water pump recently. Those are quite common on the 2.2.
yea that is alot of mileage. I suggest you keep looking. I had my fair share of bad buying experiences.
my older 2.2 cavy...bought at 137,000 I sold it at 157,000 read by the odometer.. before i sold it i had a motor swap, new tranny, belts, altenator, rotors, pads,... the list could go on forever. just be very careful with gm around that mileage....
oh yea not to mention my headgasket job 2 monthes before the motor blew!! lol the only plus side to those motors are they teach you to be your own mechanic because you dont want to keep dishing money out to get it fixed! and for 2000 dollars its far from worth it. Mileage is way to high. Keep searching around.
Ya, I passed on it. Found a '98, auto, with 118k, for $1495.
Not bad. It's funny, if you loko in the papers sometimes you can even find late 3rd gen, like 2000-maybe 2003, for a few grand and decent miles. I jsut found one in the paper this morning for $2900 - a 2001, 5-speed. Didn't say but I'm guessing it's a 2200 like an LS or something like that. THese cars don't hold their value - but damn they're reliable. I've run over 200K miles through mine so far and I've only had minor things until recently. I just did the oil pump and a couple lifters were bad so I replaced them for now until I get the new motor. Still, not that bad considering the miles and I beat the p!ss out of it.
Its common to have things go bad on used cars, You just want to make sure you get a car thats got good maintance record, I bought my 01 Cavalier 2.2L 113,000 kms stock, Never had to put much money into, Just did front rotors & pads, Tranny fluid & filter change, The car has been really relieble. Key thing of keeping the motor to last long is oil changes. Over due that pop there goes the motor. My friends mom did that with here 2004 Grand Am 2.4, Just added oil, No oil changes Big VOID on her warranty. All you got to do is make sure if you get a car that high miles, Just be prepared to fix things.
Good Luck
My 93 cavalier has just got its head gasket replaced @ 60,000 miles
the damn cars been sitting with a dead battery for 7 MONTHS, the guy I bought it from was about to junk it but i bought it from him for 500 bucks! I had it a week so far and it runs great for an old 4 cylinder 2.2
BTW I had the gasket replaced for only 250 bucks and the battery 50
So i guess I paid 800 bucks for a great used car with low miles.
well food for thought my 95 sunfire had 260 xxx km on it and it ran awsome..bagged it everyday..only rpelaced the headgasket at 120xxx and the timing set at 240xxx go for it..phil
