i have an 03 sunfire with the dual exhaust tips and i want to replace it with a new system. i want to make the replacement dual also... but i really don't know what i need to have to build it. i read that pre-fab can be costly, but i wanted some opinions.
What's your goal in replacing it?
If you want better flow on a mostly stock engine, I'd go with a premade kit.
not my opinion at all... you don't need to go pre-fab... buy two mufflers of your liking w/ a 2.25" inlet and then just find a good, reputable local exhaust shop that does either compression or mandrel (not likely) bends and tell them you want 2.25" dual outlet exhaust... a decent shop should be able to make something of similar quality for significantly less cost than pre-fab
You can also make it yourself. Pick out the bends and straightpipes you need and clamp them together. Once they're clamped, get someone to weld it up (muffler shops, etc.).
Even cheaper.
that would work too... although I don't know how much cheaper it would be
so do i need to buy a catalytic converter if i just go to a local exhaust shop?
They'll probably have some.
I'd get a hi-flow... buy the Magnaflow 94035 from turbotechracing.com and their Pacesetter ceramic coated for the Ecotec...
also, consider a resonator...
We carry in stock the magnaflow cat p/n 94035
Most all exhaust parts are always in stock.
