Cavalier questions

Greetings!

This is my first post so I hope my question isn't too dumb. There's a Toyota Cavalier languishing at a small used car lot over here in the UK. It's a '95 coupe in red. I've given it a test drive so I know it runs but after having done some research I understand these cars are 'limited' in their top speed? Does anyone know if the Toyotas are limited differently to the Chevvy's? The Toyota (being 'built' for the Japanese market) has it's speedo calibrated only in KmPH and not MPH. A neat solution would be to get one of the indiglo style kits off ebay and fit that but I'm not sure if the instruments would be calibrated differently? Another option would be to source a Chevvy instrument binnacle and swap the whole thing.

Not sure what might be possible so I hope yous guys might be able to offer some advice.

As a matter of interest, it's been on the lot for 2 years now! Nobody knows what it is except me! (Yes, I have been told it's had a new water pump but they didn't mention if the timing chain had also been replaced) It's overpriced so any 'ammo' I can use to bring the price down would be appreciated!

Cheers!

First off, buy it.

Yes, they are limited in the top speed. Not sure what the equivalent is to 108mph is...

GM limited the cars from the factory due to the stock braking and suspension not really designed for high speed use. These cars were mainly designed to be your "grocery getters"

For the indiglo, I don't have the link at the moment, but check out BlackKat (or might be spelled BlackCat) Customs. They do guages for both the US and Canadian markets (Canada being KPH)

Occasionally you will find KPM white face gauges on eBay -- may have better luck on ebay.ca rather than ebay.com

When you go to get it, give it a once-over look. Things like needing new tyres, glass cracks (I hope this isn't one, though), etc. are negotiating points.

Also, with the car being on the lot for 2 years, I'd have a mechanic also take a look at it, just to make sure nothing internally is wrong w/ the engine. Who knows how long its really been sitting...

Lastly, welcome to JBO

low ball them way low. regardless of the toyota status, its still an entry level economy box cavalier. its special to the jbody tuner world...doesn't mean its special to anyone else. the fact that its been sitting so long says that its taking up space, they might be willing to get rid of it cheap.

GO PATS!!!

The Kilometers per hour equivalent is about 170 km/h

Welcome Keil.
Being that I'm new to the J-body scene, and the JBO, my knowledge of the platform is pretty limited. However, I have done some research on the Toyota Cav's, and I have to agree w/the others. You should really scoop that car up, asap, while getting the best bang for your buck.

Apart from that, there's nothing else I can say, that hasn't already been said. So, good luck with it, and, again, welcome.

Thanks for the response guys!

Over here we didn't get the Chevvy or Toyota Cavaliers and this is apparently one of only 10 in the country! There was one on ebay recently that had been 'modded' slightly and had some problems and that went for £900 so definitely an offer is in order.

So, the top speeds of these cars are identical then? Well, at least that should mean I can convert the KmPH only speedo to MPH without too much trouble! At the minute it's sporting 2 stickies indicating 30 & 40 MPH which are spurious at best.

I'll have to go and have another look I think!
