I just bought a 1998 Cavalier off of www.govdeals.com (kinda like the ebay of government seized cars etc.). I'm going to get it Thursday and I'm sure that the battery will be dead, I'm planning on pulling it home on a dolly, but to do that I'll need to get it into netural long enough to get it onto the dolly. I was hoping that someone would know if there is any way of getting it out of park without a charge.
thanks for any help,
brian
should be able to put it in neutral and roll it, my car has before with a dead battery. mine is a 01 with the 4spd auto.
2009 Ford Mustang V6
yeah its a 4spd auto, so just turn the key and it will go?
It should, mine did when my battery was dead. Good luck with it.
Why don't you just jump it? J-Bodies run without batteries.
even better, bring a battery with you...

i was thinking the samething
Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
lol yea i dont see why you wouldnt just bring a battery w/ you.
anywho if it is dead just turn the key to the on postion then you will be able to put the car in neutral and do what you want w/ it
Don't forget the brake pedal... Has to be down to shift out of park.
Lmao the J's will run without batteries what kind of nonsense is that, you mean to tell me if you Jump a J and get the engine to turn over while the engine is running you can actually disconnect the battery and physically take it out of the car and the engine will continue to run long enough for you to drive it down the street etc. You can't be serious, would be the first car i've ever heard of you can do that to.

uh, yeah... how much time have you spent working on cars? granted, i willve charged batteries for admit its definatelly not recommended because our altenators and ecus are VERY sensitive when it comes to electric spikes. but i will tell you, first hand, i've charged batteries from stone dead, with one running 73 chevy pickup. just disconnect one battery, connect the next, truck never stopped running. when the battery died on my cav, i jumped it and drove it for a week just on the altenator. granted i had to buy an altenator the next week due to the strain that was imposed on it, but thats what lifetime replacement warrenties are for...

Okay so your telling me then Our J's will literally run with no battery period, in there if a battery goes dead you just jump it disconnect the battery take it out of the car and it will run even if you don't put a new battery in and when you stop and turn the car off your screwed again.
yeah but i mean you couldn't do like a long distance trip that way can you because sooner or later wouldn;t the alternator just burn out and the engine would stop again anyway either that or just get a hybrid engine .
he said it would run. he did not say for how long it would run.

Yeah, I wouldn't go too far without the battery because of the things pointed out above. But the car will definaly run without the battery. I know some older cars would not, my last car wouldn't. But I've personally driven my sisters 95 Cavy 2.2L home from across town without the battery hooked up (post broke right off the cheap piece of crap, kmart brand battery from previous owner). My Grand AM can do this too.
If you're going to start a J without a battery you'll need some good size jumper cables. No $5.99 special. Most cheap cables are 14 to 16 guage or so. I've even seen 18 guage once before, not sure that would even jump a car. If you're going to start it without the batter I would use 6 guage or larger, I have a set of 4 guage cables for this reason.
Kinda unrelated, but I'd like to share..
I jump started the work truck with the battery from my cordless drill using like 14 ga. wire..
That really saved my ass that day.
lilbit yeah he did say it would run no kidding i got that part the point of the whole thing is it surprises me you can even take a car and run it without the battery in it, that you could actually leave a battery sitting in your front yard and drive away in the car without the battery in it. Will it work in any car known to man or just on the J's
Depends on the car. My last car would not run without the battery. It would sputter for a minute, throwing all kinds of codes/CEL, then die.
its much less harsh on non computer controlled vehicles, especially with external voltage regulators. but, as i said, its DEFINATELLY not a reccomonded practice

Just to add on to what Rich has been saying.....
Virtually any car**, since way before computers helped them, up to todays modern cars, will run and can be driven without a battery installed or connected.
In a 12v automotive electrical system, the battery is only there to get you started, and to provide reserve power when needed. Once running, if the charging system is operating correctly, there is no drain on the battery whatsoever.
This is why after jumpstarting a car with a dead battery the car can be immediately driven and, over time, will charge up the battery as well.
Of course, with added stereo components, extra or brighter/modified lighting, anything that deviates from stock specifications, an added burden will be placed on the electrical system. There is some margin of capacity for these additions built in, but not much, so it would not be hard to overwhelm a system to where it (at least some of the time) is drawing more power than the alternator can produce, thereby drawing from the battery. This is typically only momentary, and the periods where it's not occuring allow for the battery to be recharged, maintaining itself at full capacity.
And also, as mentioned, computer-controlled systems are MUCH more sensitive to power fluctuations, so will often generate codes.
** there are obviously going to be exceptions, especially with modern cars, but in general terms this is true for any car
-Ferrite
Batteries also server another purpose. They regulate the voltage in the system by absorbing extra voltage above ~13volts. That is so long as it's not 100% full. Once full there's no refulation. It really helps the alternator keep the voltage more consistant.
Okay ferrite but even still, computer or non computer controlled cars the alternator/generator whichever applies would still burn out at some point would it not, i mean yeah cars can be driven witthout batteries but there is no way to make them invincible from burning the alternator out correct.
okay so if you have one of those lifetime replacement warranty deals, you could just do it constantly just for the heck of it run around with no battery burning out the one part only the alternator and it would be free for the life of the car is that right. I mean i know that sounds completely lame but if you said that's what lifetime replacement warranties are for in theory you could do that .
