Does anybody have any idea on what could possibly be stopping gas from flowing into my tank at a gas station. It is totally random, but every once in a while I will go to fill her up and the gas will not flow very fast into the tank, therefore triggering the pump to stop. It makes it almost impossible to fill up. So usually I will drive around for a while and try it again and it will work fine, like nothing is wrong. I'm worried because it seems to be happening more and more. It is not cold enough for things to be freezing yet. Is there a vent hose that could have crap or something in it? How hard is it to drop the tank and have a look inside? I have an 02 Cavi if that matters. Thanks.
There's no vent on the 99+ and dropping the tank is much more work than it sounds.
Do you have any real reason to suspect that something was put in the line?
As for freezing, gas doesn't freeze until about -200* F. Most modern gases have enough alcohol in them that water wouldn't freeze until about -60* F. So cold weather pretty much doesn't effect gas.
Is this any pump you go to, or do you usually experience this problem at one station/brand/area?
don't use the diesel pump
Cold weather is not the reason because this has happened in the summer as well. It also has happened at different stations, I have tried quite a few. Whenever this does happen, I just end up driving around for a couple of miles then I'll try a different gas station until it works. I don't get it.
Its usually just the station pump. I have problems with a few places here and I just go to a different gas station and it works just fine.
Don't pull the gas handle up as far? That's sometimes the problem.
Sold 6/30/06.
Vehicles without a vent hose (such as the 1999 and up Cavi and Sunfire) do have a hose inside the main filler neck to the tank that allows pressure to be equalized so that fuel will flow. Possible causes of your condition include a crack in the internal line, a pinched or plugged hose and possible vapor locking caused by improper gas tank ventilation. I have never myself expierienced this problem on a j body but when i was working as a mechanic at a local shop i did see it quite a bit on never model General Motors products with modular non vented type fuel pumps. Removal of the tank is not difficult for the average do it yourselfer and can be done in about 30 mins with the proper disconnect tools. Be careful not to kink filler neck, as you do not want to cause any more problems than u currently have.
