hi , i'm new to this board so heres a little background , i am a semi retired auto mech. from pa . now the owner of a clean 86 cav. 56,000 mi that a customer gave me for free .the car had trany problem he didn't want to fix . he was told it needed a new tranny , but i replaced the torque conv. clutch sol. for $ 18.00 and now it is good as new . my only compliant is a loud ticking noise in the morning that sounds like a lifter but almost goes away after warm up . i have gone through the valve adj twice and noise is still there . i suspect the timing chain tensioner ? is this a common thing on these 2.0 s ?. are they subject to bad lifters at this low mileage? anyone who has had this problem before ? the reason i thought it was a lifter was because of the low mileage and not being driven to often . i have tried lucas oil stabilizer & rislone & stp at different times with no change. any sugestions will be apriciated thanks .

i recently rebuilt my 2.2 in my 96, and from what i've heard, our engines are more than a little prone to their share of piston slap. the piston skirts themslves are REALLY short, so if it goes away after a few minutes, and you've done the rockers a couple times, this would be the only tink i could think of.

My old g/f had an 88 Beretta with a 2.0? and her ticking noise turned out to be a bad alternator. Go figure. Try running her without the belts on for a few seconds in the morning.
