hi, i just bought a 1997 cavalier convertible, with 170,000 miles, and suddenly, a rod came out of the block.

i have always been a ford guy.i have a 1970 maverick tunnel ramed, 1969 mustang( it took a little more than million miles before i replace the engine (it smoked, but it still burned some tire) and a 1973 galaxie 400,ooo miles original engine)

then i decided to get some economical car for daily driver. and buy this cavalier.

i buyed a engine from a junkyard to replace the broken 2.2L. i get it for 450 dlls. it came out from another 1997, 90,ooo mile car.

do i drop it in just like that, or should i replace something in it? timing chain maybe?
are this engines reliable?

thanks everybody

Nelson

honestly, if you've got the engine sitting there, THIS is the way to go. it includes:

Federal Mogul Rings
Federal Mogul Hypereutectic Pistons
Federal Mogul Rod Brgs
Federal Mogul Main Brgs
Federal Mogul Cam Brgs
Melling Oil Pump
Federal Mogul Camshaft
Federal Mogul Lifters
Melling Timing
Pioneer Frost Plugs
Victor Gaskets (everything, including all the o rings)

basically, with this kit, you're dropping in a fresh engine.

i dont think he is looking to get a engine rebuild.

a 2.2 is as good as any other engine as long as its been taken car of. id replace the oil pump, water pump, probaly a new starter, feul pump and filter. basically a tune up along with the oil and water pump. but hey thats just me

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!

Yep, I always throw a new oil pump in any engine that I've got pulled out for cheap insurance. As 99Red said, oil & water pump and some fresh gaskets & hoses should get you down the road just fine.
