best intake for my Z

ok i know its all going to be about opinion. but whats the best to spend my money on. i would like an actual real cold air intake but i cant seem to find any for my 2.4 all i find is short ram intakes. also, how big of a difference would a cold air be to a short ram. i know i would lose a little power and get better throttle response from a short but i would really like a true cold. thanks

the best intake for your car would be the one which the turbo strapped to it

FACT: a $200+ intake does NOT flow any better than a $30 ebay intake.
FACT: an intake is nothing more than a piece of pipe with a filter on one end.

opinion: i'd prefer the short ram, makes less bends. less bends=better velocity.

induction Dynamics makes a cold air kit for the 2.4

but like it was said, intakes are all the same. no difference in a $250 AEM intake or a $30 ebay intake.

you guys say that they are all the same, but you are wrong. The $250 AEM does a lot more than the $30 ebay.

1. Weight reduction - $200 is pennies weigh more than $30 in pennies, spending them reduces weight significantly.

2. AEM is nice and shiny, it has a "bling" factor if you will, where as the $30 ebay is usually painted

3. If you pop your hood with a bunch of people around and the intake says AEM, you will be world renown by the ricers for spending so much money, and you will be made fun of by the true car guys for spending too much money

4. The AEM will usually require you to work that extra shift to pay for food and delinquent drinking, where as you can find $30 in your mom's jewelry box and under the sofa couchens

5. When you get rid of the car, you won't feel so bad about throwing away a piece of $30 pipe, versus a $200 pipe.

Did I leave anything out?

ah you guys are so wrong the cheap ebay intakes arnt even true cold air intakes. If you want a little taste of "real" performance you need a true cold air induction system. Which requires air to be drawn in from an outside source. IE your inner fender well usually with a COLD air intake the fiter is then "boxed" in to accept all the cooler air coming to it and separating it from the warm air produced from your engine. Im new here and have seen a alot of backwards posts.

a taste of 'real' performance doesn't involve putting an intake on a 4cyl no matter what brand, thats what boost does. The ambient temps under the hood during driving is only a few degrees in difference then outside air, get a cheap ebay one and put a decent filter on it and call it a day

no one said the e-bay specials were true cold air intakes. and, as said above, an intake, of any length, will not make a noticeable gain on our cars, except to be a bit louder. "cold air" is a relative term anyway, because the air moves around so much in the engine bay while you're driving, that it doesn't get a chance to heat up but 3 or 4 degrees higher than the air outside the engine bay. as with exhausts, when it comes to air flow, its better to have something with as few bends as possible. this being the case, the short ram wins.

My answer was an answer to the original question. Which type of intake is best for a z? My answer is what I believe to the best route for doing in intake on any Naturally aspirated engine. Now since your knowledge of thermodyanmics is so great and cool air doesnt do much for performance. Now have a gander at some of my pics of my cars here in my shop.

undergoing porting for better air flow cause we all know cfms=power

just a taste of my little world. I know nothing of boost or of power or that cold air creates better fuel mixtures. And sins ambient temps in in engine bay are so MINOR i should run all my engines without an intercooler. And toss you the bill for the damage as a result. COLDER is better period even if only a few degrees and in a 4cyl. by saying cold air makes no differance you are denying the simple fact that cold air is more dense (literally MORE oxygen\) than say your warmer air, plus just think over time these "little" gains in economy and performance add up to more than face value. And by doing that you are denying vaguely the purpose of even nitrous oxide or any other fuel burning additive. When a person takes advantage of nitrous oxide they are doing so to get more OXYGEN in the fuel to burn it faster than it normally would. So cooler air more oxygen more REAL performance no matter how small man.

using an intercooler has nothing to do with the ambient temperture under the hood, you use an intercooler to cool the charged air as building boost generates heat. There is a big difference in gains from cooler charges for boosted and n/a engines, the difference for a n/a 4cyl are so slight it isn't worth spending an extra $200, it could be better spent in other places to get a larger gain

im impressed with your pics of cars, but, i saw that all of them still had the filter in the engine bay... they all look nice, but i just dont care that much. he asked "whats the best intake for my z?" and as it stands, he has nothing done to it. SO, with that being the case, i thought, maybe he doesnt want to spend $300 on something that will net him the same difference as something that cost $30. maybe, he thought that just because its a "true cold air" it will magically drop the temperature outside the engine bay to something like alaska. i'll just make sure, when i post information from now on, that my non college degree having ass puts in there: "im dumb, dont take my advice, go ahead and piss your money away." but whatever. like i said... i really dont care that much.

buy the 30 dollar intake, go to wal mart buy your self a can of metal primer and a can of (your color choice) spay paint and match your intake to your car. 40$ tops and looks more uniqe than a piece of shiny aluminum pipe
