How to get a car ready for primer?
Thursday, June 07, 2007 2:02 AM
Hey All,

Total newbie here but im wondering what sand paper to start with to get rust out of my car and what grit sand paper should I use to start? The reason im asking this question is my car has rust on the courter panel and its eating into the body of the car so im thinking i'll have to cut it all out, I dont know how to bondo or fiberlass so I would like some assistance please? If anyone knows any manuals or anything about this subject im willing to read up on it becaus im getting ready to go buy the tools I need to fix my own car to get it ready for primering! Thank You Everyone!

If you have a local parts store near you i would try there, I know at autozone we carry manuals on "how to paint" all the way to "how to install audio equipment", plus your regular repair manuals.

you're going to need more than just sand paper.

get an angle grinder to grind away all the rust. then, whatever you do, DO NOT use fiberglass or bondo (body filler) to repair it. get a new piece of metal welded in place. fiberglass simply will not hold up well enough to make it worth the trouble. eventually, it will crack or fall out and you'll have to redo it again.

do not do this yourself. no offense but you obviously have no clue on what your doing. if the rust is all the way through the metal (which it probably is becasue your talking about bondo and fiberglass) then you need to cut out the area and weld in a new piece. if you dont do that then it will keep coming back.

also bondo isnt used to cover up holes. its used as a finishing touch to filling low spots on body work. 95% of it is usually sanded off anyway.

Rust is not a "beginner" level project to start on... I did auto body/paint for 5 years, I know.

"filling" the holes with fiberglass/BODY FILLER (Bondo is a name brand, and a crappy one at that) will NOT FIX the rust. It must be cut out and new metal welded in... then the "finishing touches" applied.

Jumping into fixing rust when you know nothing about autobody/paint work is like taking Algebra 1 and expecting to jump right into rocket science (slight exaggeration but you get the point)

If you want to learn body work, you need to start off with basics like proper sanding techniques, and slowly work your way up. Even then, you really learn how to do things the right way you need hands on from someone who knows what they're doing, to get really good at it...
