is the Chevrolet cavalier a good car to tune?
i'm 16 been working 40+ hours a week for summer and have around $1500 i have seen alot of 99' cavaliers going for around 1 grand is this a good car for a newbie to tune?

A good tune is essential for our cars mainly with boost, unfortunately there are only a couple ways to get a good tune,HP tuners and Megasquirt. Both are not cheap and would require some knowledge to tune our cars.If you can afford an extra $5k to $10k,you would have a car capable of serious h.p.If you can get a cav. or fire for cheap, start out with all the bolt-ons you can get as they will be good supporting mods if you plan to go the nitrous or boost route.

i think by tuning he means "customizing" but they are decent quite a few aftermarket parts if thats what you mean. if you mean what grumpy is saying listen to him.

I hear what your saying grumpy what im really asking is. Is a cav. a good car ( easy ) to throw mods into compared to a honda civic?
also i hear from people that cavs. tend to not be as well built as civics ( stock ) and wear down quicker.

sorry for the bad english .

Not gonna lie to ya,took awhile to admit this myself but a cav is an econo-box with poor braking, poor suspension, among other things but with the money and the know-how or at least the ability to learn, these cars are capable of well over 300 hp.it comes down to what vehicle do you like better.

If they are the 2200 I4... Then you are looking at needed alot more than $1500 to tune it. Better off to start with a 99 Z24. It's got a 2.4L that has more power than the 2200.

IMHO, not to know the J-Bodies. Pick up something older like a Ford Probe (KLZE swap), Mitsu Eclipse, old Toyota Celica, or Honda Civic/Prelude. You can find those for under $1500 and it would be easier in the long run to tune them. That and you would get better results dollar for dollar.

Compared to a Honda civic,Prelude or an Integra were does cav. come in? im just looking for a easy car to mod and look cool then im going for proformance right now cavs. are in my price range and their newer then honda haha. And yes i would buy a cav. over a civic because i dont want to be like the millions of other teens who mod a civic. i just want to know where my money is best spent.

Thx grumpy for all the help

btw the cars engine that i have been talking about is an 2.2L I4 SFI
Re: chevrolet cavalier

Money best spent would be with a Honda/Acura. More gains for the dollar.

You can mod a Cav just fine, but it's gonna cost you more than a Honda/Acura.

The 2.2L I4 (2200 in a 99) is a tough engine to mod. There is stuff out for it, but not much for choice.

Try looking for an eclipse or celica if you don't like the Hondas. OR try to find a Z24 / Sunfire GT. More stuff out there for it.

yeah don't look for a cav with anything other than a ld9 2..4 or a 2.2 eco but on the other hand there was a guy selling a cav with a 2.3 quad 4 in the clasifieds, which does have more hp than a 2.4.If you just want to mod to be different ,look at other vehicles other than the above mentioned, cavs and fires are without a doubt the most hated and ragged on cars out there unless they are runnin 11's in the 1/4 mile. But for the bang for the buck cavs/fires are worth it

Thanks for all the help
Another question- the only differance between what car i listed and a z24 is the engine?
If so is there a engine i can put into a cav that would have more power ?

a z24 has a ground effects kit, different front bumper, 16 inch rims, the 2.4 engine.

people have swapped in the 2.4 of course, the 2.2 ecotec, and even the 3800 v6 engine.

4 Door with a 2200 is the slowest model Cavalier in the 3rd Gen... Just thought you should know that. If your looking for something that is good on Insurance and looks good.

Try a Ford Escort ZX2 or a Focus. Cheap to insure. I have a Focus ZX4 and it cost me $65 a month for full coverage. Lots of stuff out for them plus Ford Racing Support.
You can find a Ford ZX2 or ZX3 for cheap if you look back at the older ones.

I had a 1992 Cavalier at 16. Drove it for two years for about 1800 per year (2dr coup)

This year, I'm 18 btw, I got a 2000 2dr Cav, with no collision it went up 10 dollars per month. So its not bad at all.

Ask your insurance company, you may be (pleasantly) surprised. Or, be horrified at a 4 grand Insurance bill. As many teens are.

Does any one have an idea at what mileage you would start have to replaceing things? If driven by a normal driver.

And any other tips on buying used?

The 2.4 doesn't appear to be as reliable as the 2.2, just keep that in mind.

1999 Cavalier Sedan, 237k miles, 2.2 Auto, White (dead)

Coming from someone who owns 2 , 2.2s',you'll never make as much power with that motor as a 2.4.And if correct maintenance is done a 2.4 can be reliable.

If a used car costs $1000, anything and everything is fair game, as it is likely several years old and has a fair amount of miles.
