hey, I was looking at steering wheels the other day and I was told by the guys at mopac that I can't change mine cause I have a stupid air bag... now minus the legal stuff in taking one out why??? and there must be a way, people can have a new car that doen't have the factory steering wheel so I guess the next question would be how or what do I need to do it?? oh, I have a 01 sunfire gt 2.4

It's just legal reasons. If a car came with SRS it's illegal to remove it.
It will probably void your personal injury part of your insurance if you get in an accident too.

you can change it, you just wont have an airbag

After being in an accident and having it deployed, I understand now why it's there and what it does. I'd leave it and get a pink frilly outer wheel cover...

Check out wheelskins. They're nice leather wraps for the wheel that come in different colors or combinations, and lace up nice. I think Jason @ APlusperformace.com sells them, but I know eBay selss them. Keep the airbag dude. The added bling of an aftermarket wheel is not worth all of the issues that come along with it.

How wild do you want to get? I installed a Lumina Euro wheel because my stock wheel was getting ratty and I didn't have the cash for an aftermarket wheel. All I needed was a handful of basic hand tools and a steering wheel puller. No adaptors or anything.

I took a chance and put one in for looks. I won't be driving on highways with this car though. That's what my minivan is for!

Check the classifieds. The price is negotiable, but it's a nice wheel, and all of the parts are there to mount it.

If you have never messed with an Air Bag system before, I, recommend you don't start without professional help. There is a very good chance you could hurt yourself.

Funny how I'm reading this post again. We just had a guy replace an ignition switch in one of our fleet F250's the other night. A couple of mech's and I were looking into another vehicle when BAM! The bag blasted the guy right in the face. Besides the dummy never disconnected the battery, I have no idea what he touched to set it off. Mech is out on disability now with a cut from the bridge of his nose around under his eye socket (12 stitches) and whiplash. He probably had his face right up against the wheel with the column apart.

Moral once again: Don't mess with the airbag unless you know what you're doing.
