is it worth it to do engine work and transmission work and all of that fun stuff to my 2000 cavalier its a 4 door and i don't have the money for big things like a turbo or a supercharger but what are some less expensive mods that i can buy or do so i can get my car to keep up with my friends.....the drive Jettas , Maxima (some stuff under the hood but im not sure what)and 2006 Honda civic 4 door. im not looking to destroy them or street race with them im just looking to keep up with them so when we go places they don't try to ditch me cause i got the slowest car.
what kind of engine? 2200 or 2.4L? Hell even if its the 2200 you should still be able to keep up with them somewhat. I havent had any problems with my 2200 keeping up with other cars and my car is a bastard child of GM with a 3spd tranny lol. But back on point it depends on what you really wanna do, and by mentioning you dont have the funds for the motor work. I would only suggest you go with a intake and exhaust to begin with, it wont be massive gains but at least its something you know... When you get the funds full up there then you can start with some head work, headers, rods, cams, valves, etc... Same principle basically for both motor whether it be the 2200 or the 2.4(LD9)... Just look around the Performance section read a few things here and there and youll know what you have to do.
F/S 00-02 Type J Bumpers front and rear Make me an Offer
ahhhh but what does the exhaust sound like on a automatic car cause my friends tell me that it would sound bad.
Read my profile, I own a 2.2l and so far have maybe spent 2k tops.

To be honest with you it is piontless to do minor performance mods. You could get alot of money wrapped up in it and get maybe a 5whp gain which is no where near enough to come close to the cars you mentioned. Besides if you have the money to be doing all that stuff why not just buy a car you like. Just being honest with you if you do stuff that will draw attention to your car like an exhaust you are going to get laughed at. The reason that an exhaust sounds bad on an automatic is that it is easy to tell that the car is an automatic therfore not that fast anyway.
FORGET GIRLS GONE WILD WE HAVE GOVERNMENT SPENDING GONE WILD!
hahah yah i kinda figured it would sound bad. there were never and 2.4s stuck into a four door cause i need to have the four doors. Would it be expensive to get a 2.3 or an ecotech motor from a same year car and swap it out i know it would be in the few thousands for sure but has anyone ever done it?
and then\
wiht copious amounts of
when I get back to the states can you guess what MY 3 mods will bee........
it can be done for under 1000. if you got the 2200 and an auto, I can't guarantee you 13's but for money spent, that is where its at

oh, and btw, with those, you WOULD destroy them in a race.
just make sure you release the button before 108 or you WILL be sorry

I disagree. Moter mounts are always a good mod but are not going to give much performance benefit. Drag radial are pointless with a 2.2 auto since wheelspin is not going to be a huge issue. Nitrous would be nice but still will not even put you into the 14s. Even witha big ntirous shot a mid 15 second 1/4 mile would be doing good.

and how big of a shot are you planning on running with a stock motor? you wont get too many passes with anything more than 75 100 tops before it blows
depends on how ballsy you are
as far as the slicks being useless, they will become useful when you hit the spray
and for the motor mounts, they are cheap and I like em
btw, you try coming up wiht a faster combo for under 1000

Ive only got maybe 2500 in my motor or so, it keeps up with cars around here. I dont go driving real fast when theres other cars on the roads usually, but theres the occational run. Actually im suprised at what ive outrun -- at least untill they were losing and stopped trying.
Its not real fast, but if you know how to drive it, it can be formidable.
I had a 4 speed auto sunfire, with the same mod list (almost) and it was pretty quick, and it didnt sound bad at all (exhaust). Who cares if its an auto, get a shift+ or stall converter, or both, and youre good to go.... NO one can shift as fast as a 4spd with a shift+ on it.
An exhaust (to me) only sounds bad when theres nothing else but that to back it up.. in this case i mean a muffller and nothing more, if theres a full exhaust including a header, it sounds worlds better.
Its all really what you want to do. If you want to be able to keep up, work on the 2200, its a pig, but with some work, you can make it move. If you want to be able to smoke them, put in an eco or ld9 , and build that.... more money, but more readily available power.
btw, if the 2000 was a 3 speed I stand corrected on the dr's
mine was a 4speed and I could spin the tires out of the hole if I wanted to. flash the converter just right and all I get is a bark and I am off. add spray to that and thats where the tires come into play
weather you choose to follow what I said or not, the ln2 can be done. teh x-wife took mine so I have had time to think of how to do it agian and I have decided to go eco 5speed. spray it until I am ready for a decent biuld and a turbo
in turn what I am suggesting to you is to spray until yo can afford a decent biuld and a turbo. the way I see it, most fun per dollar until you can afford to upgrade. and if you decide to stay no2 mods like exaust and rockers and @!#$ will only benifit more.
granted the quickest cars on this site are all turbo, you obvoslyu cannotaffordthat right now. and no2 DOES work.

those are some good suggestions but nos isn't and option because my dad would shoot me if he found the bottle.
Which engine is better the echo or the 2.4, I have hear you can get alot of power out of both but If I were to swap the engine which one would be cheaper but still have a kick to it and would i still be able to keep it as an auto??

Either, but the LD9 (2.4) would be the easier of the 2 given the amount of wiring involved for the Eco. In either case, you would need a new trans since the bolt patterns to the engine are different. Since you have an auto, I recommend a Shift Plus and a trans cooler, even with no mods yet. Step 1 (or stage 1) has slightly firmer shifting.
Could also go V6 and keep your same trans, but sounds like your dad may not like that option too much if he's that much against N2O

yah i don't think my parents would like me taking the car apart...my mom is against me getting a new deck and subs but i went ahead and got 2 10 inch subs. For now i think ill wait and save up a bit more cash and see what i can go cause my friends say go big or go home especially with the cavalier but i told them to wait awhile until i get my money from my accident
and then will see whos car is faster, once i do some work to my cavalier im gonna go up to mission drag way and do a few runs against my friends.
shizz. If that's the same Mission I'm thinking of, I got an invite from a couple of the BC J-body guys to bring my Fire up there (just need to get me passport first among other things
)
Might end up seein ya there (unless there's another Mission)

Nope, nothing is worth it, I say burn it and then kill yourself... everything is much simpler that way....
Or maybe a moped...
Or maybe an eco swap...

That's why he doesn't
Take the spare wheel out and stick it in there or something ;P
