The only thing wrong with the term "rice" is it is all about perspective and nobody ever agrees with everybody.

But to answer your question, it is usually anything that goes against the norm or a mod that doesn't fit or flow well on a car.

Rice is a keystone of the grass family that produces a vast number of grains consumed by humans. It has been under intensive cultivation originating in Asia for over 4,000 years and has since spread across the world, where almost a third of the population depends on rice for vital nutrition. Rice is in the genus Oryza, which is separate from that of wheat, spelt, and similar grass crops, although it resembles them in structure.

X2 ... (I was gunna do that too... but he beat me to it)

Since I can't post a quote out of an encyclopedia because some one beat me to it.....

The term "Rice" originated as a term used to decribe vehicles made in Japan.... You used to hear the words "Rice Grinder" used by bikers to describe Jap bikes quite a bit... and you still will if you hang around anyone thats been a biker for awhile.

Today.. most people just use it as a general term for tackey modifications done to cars in general (basically your fast and furiouse looking cars). If you've ever seen an Escort with a fart can, some stickers, and a huge aluminum wing on it.... thats a riced out car... When people first started doing crap like that too cars... most of the cars where Japanese... and by the time people started "ricing out" american cars... the name had already stuck.

The words "Rice Burner"... is another story.... A rice burner is a vehicle made in Asia or Japan.... thats it...... It doesn't have anything to do with being a loud 4-cylinder....My motorcycle is a rice burner (Suzuki), even an Acura NSX, or Toyota Supra is a rice burner.... but a Cavelier or Sunfire Isn't. I hate it when people call my car a rice burner.... it's a Pontiac for christs sake.... if your going to use slang... do it correctly.

Rice is typically used to describe any tacky or tasteless vehicle modification performed in order to attract attention or make the car appear to be faster/better than it is.

The problem is that the terms "tacky", "tasteless" and "better" are highly subject to opinion.

in my experience, the word "rice" is used by people who are exactly what they call others....rice
uninformed, closed-minded, useless newbs who have no prolem bashing what others want to do to their car, and yet 9 times out of 10 have an intake and a super sweet muffler on stock exhaust. its not your car, so why label someone for doing what THEY want to THEIR car, wether you disagree with it or not.

AMEN! Let people do what they want to their car. If it isn't flying off and harming people or property, who cares?

no true car enthusiest would dare use the word, let alone allow it to define any aspect of building a car. just proves how worthless they are to the scene

Re: Definition of Rice

It's a stupid term. If you think a car is ugly that's fine, but if it's not your car why do you care? Nobodies forcing you to look at it. The only time you should ever put down (and I don't even mean it in the harsh way) somebodies car is if they ask you for an opinion, and you want to be honest. Even then you could just tell them that you don't like the way such and such looks, or how they painted so and so. All this needless "dissing" on other peoples work is sad and ridiculous.

i'm with Joey on this one. i may not like the look of a car with a big spoiler on the trunk but that just means you'll never see my car with one. My car is nearly stock on the outside (except painted calipers, the mesh in the front vents and different exhaust tips) and according to alot of ppl here i drive a "ricer" simply because it's a 4 banger that has been modded. it's frustrating but also drives me to turn my car into one hell of a sleeper so i can hand them their a$$es at the track.

ok thats messed you guys, we are all here because we have a common ground, trying to share and use information on j-bodies, not to "bash" one or the other car that you may not like, its starting to look like only the guys that arent all that fast on the track are calling other j-bodies rice. And Joey for your reply, No they just hate j-bodies out here doesn't matter age or car they drive. They are ok with neons and civics but not j-bodies for some reason, you get the very odd one that may like them, but 99 percent of them hate j-bodies, they believe we are only capable of pulling of 17 seconds on the track but I say depends what you do to car and mainly the driver, bu there are others that just call them worthless pieces of crap and so on

I've always heard Rice = Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements, i.e. Turbo stickers when you don't have a turbo, etc.
RiceBurner = anything JDM

I tend to be very conservative when it comes to visual mods..... I'm not even a big fan of body kits unless they look "simular" to stock.

I like streetfire kits on sunfires... but thats where I draw the line.... and I'll never put a wing or aftermarket spoiler on a car unless its a rwd race car and needs it....

I prefer a car with a stock body... tastefull rims, cf hood, lowered, tint, and maybee a non stupid windshield banner..... so I tend to consider a lot of cars to be riced out...... I feel that if your trying to make a slow car look fast... your an idiot, and you don't look cool...... you should just make your car fast and not flawnt it instead.

Don't mod your car because you think other people will think it looks cool.... mod it to look the way you (and only you) want it too.

Idk how many times some kid with an old Mazda 626 with a fart can and a fiberglass wing has tried to coax me into racing his slow ass on the street..... don't be one of those people...

Thats all just my personal opinion and tastes though..... if you are truely modding your car to your tastes with no thought of what other people on the road will think... then fine..... to each thier own I quess.
