Noob Transmission Question
Tuesday, December 18, 2007 8:06 PM
I have a 5 speed 1997 Cavalier Z24 with ~150k city miles on it that was recently bequeathed to me. Naturally, given its Northern Virginia heritage, the drivetrain is a little iffy right now.

There's a hold in 3rd and in 5th when trying to shift it into gear which (as I've been told) is likely the synchronizers. I figured I'd replace the clutch while it's gutted too since the Z doesn't always want to go into reverse when I want it to.

I have a few questions for you guys. Would any J body transmission match up with the LD9 in my car, or is there a specific tranny for the Cavaliers?

Second, does anyone have any recommendations on a decent priced clutch? I probably won't be doing the forced-air thing for a while and am looking for something that's better than the OEM.

That's all I got. Thanks guys in advance!

Very unhealthy 97 Z24

you want the isuzu 2.4 manual tranny.
these came in 95-99 cav's, sunfires, and i think grandam's.
Not sure if the 2.4 Alero had them also?
You could always look in the transmission forum since this question's been asked 100 times +

I'm almost certain the isuzu wasn't used on the 2.4, I know it was on the 2.2. The 2.4 is likely a getrag. For the clutch, I'd recommend Spec or Centerforce (my DualForce has treated me well).

Getrag wasn't used until 2000

from 95-99 ALL j body cars had the isuzu trans. in 2000, they switched over to the getrag.

Just to clarify, Isuzu is the MANUFACTURER of the transmission, same with Getrag. A 2.2 transmission WILL NOT fit on a 2.4 regardless of the MANUFACTURER.
