I got the check engine light on for about a day or two, then it goes away on it's own. While the check engine light is on (not sure, maybe even when it's off) my gas mileage is horrible. Happened about 3 times so far each time about 2-3 weeks apart. I got a full exhaust last spring and this is the first winter with it (this started when it got really cold outside ... but this might just be a coincidence).
Go to autozone and have them read the code. Let us know what it is.
Can they still read the code now that the light is off?
It should be stored in the PCM, I have read codes with the light off before, but this was like right after the light turned off. I dont know how long they get stored for.
Im guessing o2 sensor, mine does the same thing, on off, on off lol.
this happened to mine last year,it was the gas cap,got crap milage and the engine fan was on steady, just take off the gas cap and put it back on tight ,make sure it clicks a few times, take off the negative to reset pc or get the code read and tells us what the code is
Ends up it's the O2 sensor which failed. PCM130 and PCM133. They said it would cost $260 to fix ... how much do these things normally cost? Can it be done at home easily?
$260? is that the front or rear one. the sensor itself is under $100 for the part...well depends on where you go

BTW: This is my Sig.
assuming you obviously have a cavalier or sunfire, some are right in the exhaust manifold, you can see it from the top of the engine screwed into the manifold with probably one purple wire attached. if its that one, you can easily do this yourself. if its the lower one, you can also do this yourself, if you have a jack and some jack stands.
Did I mention I drive a 2000 Lumina now?-----wigm-tuners.org member
I just replaced the O2 sensor on my 02 Sunfire - piece of cake (even though I had to extend the wiring by about two feet - lol - aftermarket header sensor placement...).
On another note, I'm putting a high flow cat on and am wondering if I should reinstall the sensor behind the cat - what will increased flow do to the readings and how will it affect fuel/air mixture? Any ideas?
