Body Kit Fix
Thursday, December 27, 2007 6:05 PM
Hey guys my Christmas Eve was the most retarded day of my life. I was rushing home to get some presents wrapped and I pulled into my driveway.. Well the driveway in one spot has an incline... guess where I went. When I hit the incline my body kit bumper in the driver side lower corner bent back snapped off and destroyed my fender. I am in the process of fixing the bumper the part ripped off was roughly 1.5ft long and 6inches high and broke into 3 pieces from that. Right now I put 4 layers of glass on the back side of the bumper and on the front I put one layer and lots of resin then added some kitty hair body filler to the front. If I add 2-3 more layers of glass in the inside of the bumper will it be about as strong as it use to be and be able to with stand daily driving? Thanks for your time guys!

It's the Blits bodykit for the Sunfire 1999.. it was made by ATIRACING. It ripped off starting at the lower pointed end of the driver side and took off the whole slop going toward the wheel well including the hole near the well. It broke into three pieces after that. I have fiberglassed 4 layers on the back and one on the front and kitty haired that whole side to cover all the cracks. I'm currently sanding it like crazy and adding 2-3 more layers to the backside. I'll post a pic of the current work soon.

yeah, sounds like you know what you are doing, good luck with the fix, might as well put some evil eyes on the hood while you're at it

if i were you i would grind down whatever you put on the exterior of the bumper. especially if you layed up the resin thick. resin by itself isnt for strentgh, the mat is waht gives it its strength.

not to mention you now will have a non flush seam in the front. i would rivot some supports in from the back, then glass all the cracks real well from the back. if there are cracks that arent all the way to the edges, i would also drill out the end of the crack so it doesnt continue to spread.....because it will spread.

this is exactly the reason i bought urethane. costs alot more to begin with but saves money over time.

Hey guys well I got the bodykit fixed about 2 weeks ago. Still needs a little touch up with spotputty to smooth out a few spots on the seam. Looks great though can't tell it was broken at all, I haven't painted it yet probably will wait until it gets warmer in virginia. Last night sucked though I was coming home and hit a skunk and actually hit the sucker right where the bodykit originally broke. The kit held up to hiting a skunk at roughly 40mph and feels extremely strong (not much flex though but thats ok) so the kit should be great. After 8 layers of glass that front bumper should last with normal daily drivining untill I hit some thing big or hit something going 60mph. I felt bad for the skunk, he wasn't there when I turned around so see if he was dead.
