Turn the engine over and plug #1 cylinder's sparl plug hole with your finger. When the pressure builds and pushes your finger, your on the compression stroke. Then look in at the piston and turn till ti stops moving up. That TDC Compression.

But sence your confused by a simple engine term, i suggest you let someone else build it.

There should also be stock marking on the engine also.....

The cams have locks in them (holes that bolts go through) so they shouldn't be a problem.... if you cant find the mark on your crank... just remove your spark plug for you #1 cylinder (closest to the belts) slide a longer screw driver in the hole and have someone move the crank slowley until the piston is all the way up again (it stops a little before going back down). Although with the pully off... your most likely not going to accidently move the cank shaft especiaaly if you leave your spark plugs in because the tourgue you would need to put on your crank gear to overpower the compression of the engine should be enough to keep it from moving (when you test time it with a ratchet wrench you'll know what I'm talking about)

Just be carefull...... also.... when you put the chain back on.... make sure that there isn't any slack anywhere exept for between the grank gear and waterpump gear (where the tenshioner is).
