My 01 2200 5speed cav didn't come with a tach and i was wondering if its possible to put one in and how do they work/ get a rpm reading.
Swap in a 00-05 cluster that has a tach in it... it'll work.
Where Can i get one? Not many junkyards where i come from to get one.

That's the tach I'm using right now. There are better ones out there but since I only wanted it out out of curiousity, I didn't need anything expensive. It's pretty accurate and I've yet to have any problems with it.
Just save yourself some frustration and find a used Autometer 9117 Tach Adapter. I got mine for about $40 shipped and I've had a working tach ever since. As far as mounting, I've got mine in a single a-pillar pod but you could mount it on the steering column or do something custom.

...that was fourth on the list of "Tach" Search in the Interior forum.
That setup ran me about $70 for the tach, adapter and single pillar pod.
you can get any aftermarket tac, given most of the are the size of a grapefruit, but it comes with instructions on how to mount it. it pretty much taps off the signal wire on the ignition coils. buying an aftermarket tach will probably be the cheapest way to go. i hate to say it but, you could probably find one on ebay for cheap. if there are any flea markets/swap meets near by, you might get one cheaper. if you go that route, make sure you get everything that goes with it like wiring harness and INSTRUCTIONS!! good luck

if you swap clusters, your also swapping the odometer. keep that in mind.

wrong. on 00+ cars, the mileage isnt stored in the cluster. since its in the bcm, if you swap clusters, it shows the vehicle's true mileage.

As a whole, an aftermarket tach setup is more expensive. I could have got a tach cluster for $40 from the junkyard but I wanted to retain my original cluster so I went with aftermarket. My tach was $25 shipped brand new on eBay and I picked up the pillar pod for $10. It's the tach adapter that will cost the most. I tried a used RKsport one and it didn't work, so I bought a brand new one and it did not work. I finally cut my losses and bought a used Autometer one on eBay and it worked flawlessly. So the OP will have to find a good deal on an Autometer Adapter if he goes the aftermarket route.
I want to go with a factory guage cluster if possible.
what if you have a 98 cavalier and you want a tack?
i got the 5" faze tach and it wired up with no problem. it has options on it to set it up to your engine size. had it for three years and never had a problem with it.

My car may run 18s, but I can do your taxes in 10 seconds flat.
JBO lube - they would never have enough in stock and we'd never see RodimusPrime again
