I recently had made a post about some problems that I was having with my car. From the beginning my fuel pump had went out and I got it fixed. When I left the garage the check engine light came on. I took it back to them and they took the light off and said it was fixed. Also take into consideration that everytime I stopped the rpms would either drop most of the time and go back to normal or they would be high for a little bit. The car runs good its just when I come to a stop. I took it back to them and they took off the light again and replaced the gas cap thinking that was the problem but of course it didn't fix it. I tried replacing the TPS and it didnt work so i kept the original. They said that they had to call a dealerhip and tell them tht the code it was throwing was a ev code. I was thinking that it was an evap line or something. The guy at the shop said it was probably the evap box. I have never heard of this and just wanted to know if anyone has any info on it or what because the shop is giving back my money I had spent on this whole mess of s%*t. I also reset the computer when I put on the new tps as well. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated so I can fix this d#%n problem myself.
the 'evap box' is the charcoal/carbon canister. basically it stores fuel vapors to keep pressure from building in the fuel tank. if they replaced the gas cap then it sounds like the code you were/are throwing is an evap leak. is it was a solenoid code then replacing the gas cap would be pointless. it also sounds like they're just guessing at what the problem really is. go to autozone and get the code read there and tell us what the actual code is. from there we can give you some better info. if it is a leak code the best way to find it is to use a smoke machine. this fills the system with smoke and then the smoke comes out where the leak is. it sounds like if they just replaced the fuel pump though, they probably left a hose off or a line loose or something like that on the tank.
Yeah that is what I was thinking. This is an 03 cavalier so I didn't know if it had the same set up as the 2000 or 01 models. I know that after they had fixed the fuel pump i could smell a pretty significant odor of gas when the car was on and i was standing beside it. It doesn't do that now. I have looked through all kinds of forums and seen that it has to be coming from something with this thing. I had seen where people were having prolems with a ground wire on the harness on the 01 models. I am taking it back this friday and they are supposed to tell me what the prob is. They are pretty much guessing from what I can tell. I have been at this problem with them for too long but I really dont want to pay for a smoke test because I am sure it will cost a lot. Well i guess you have to do what you have to do. Any more suggestions will help
if you started having the problem after they worked on it and it's coming from the area that they worked on, chances are it was something they did (or didn't do) that is the problem. since this appears to be the case you shouldn't have to pay anything for them to fix their own mistake. in all honesty you could drop the tank yourself and take a look around, but that's not very fun without a lift (and not always fun with one either).
like i said, since the problem appeared after they worked on it and is coming from the area they worked on, it's probably their own fault and they should fix it for free. best of luck with it. sounds like you don't go to the smartest/most honest mechanic around. it's a shame that people out there are like this. makes it tougher for the rest of us.
Yeah thats definately the truth. Well when the car died on me and they replaced the fuel pump they gave me a good price and when i took it back they took the check engine light off and sd it was fixed. I told them that this friday when im off if they dont fix it i want my money back because they were supposed to fix it the first time. I am getting the code and posting it on here but i know that its that d#$n p0440 code or something in that general area. I just know they wont fix it so i will prolly end up takin it to the dealership because at least they will fix it right even though the money is kinda high.
that's definitely an evap code, but i can't remember exactly which one off the top of my head. just tell them that you've been having the problem since you got the car fixed by them and they need to take care of it because it wasn't an issue before. like i said, it's probably something small like a hose or something that's not connected. they probably just don't want to admit that they screwed up or don't want to drop the gas tank again.
I am guessing that a hose is not connected or its a little lose because i would seriously doubt it being anything else. I mean it could be the box but they have been down there fooling around with it in the first place when they put on the fuel pump so that has to be it
I had an evap code ealier this summer and it turned out being a wiring harness in the back above the axle by the evap can, it was a short one. I beleive it was for the evap solenoid? I noticed it when I was getting new tires and I was looking around under the car and saw some wires dangling. Got one from the junkyard, plugged it in and the light shutoff.
Ok, i went back to the garage and checked the code and it said it was P0440A. They are saying that it is the black box. I am not getting charged for it but I will definately take another look under the car to check on the wiring harness
I checked underneath the car and the harness is fine with no lose wires
they just erased the code/CEL? and said it was fixed...WOW they are not a good company to do business with.
Yeah they are pretty dumb. Like i said before they want to put a charcoal canister box on it in place of the one thats on now. I am taking it to get a smoke test done first to check for a leak cause they dont know s$%t.
i wrote: 0440 relates directly to the evaporative emissions system. the parts that it monitors include (from stern to stem): the gas cap, the gas fill neck, the gas tank, the gas tank pressure sensor, the vacuum lines running from the tank to the evap canister, the canister itself, the valve on the canister, the lines from the canister to the purge valve, the purge valve itself, and finally, the line from the purge valve to the intake manifold.
if any one of these 16 parts is faulty, it could trigger the 0440. the most common place to begin diagnosis is with the gas cap, as if not screwed on tight enough (by yourself or the gas station attendant) -or- if the rubber on the cap has degraded enough to not make a seal, then this code could be thrown. a gas cap should not cost more than $6-$8 at your local parts tore. next, a visual inspection of the lines to see if any are cracked, broken, kinked, or otherwise pinched off/leaking. if, after these inspections have been made and determined to not be the cause of the problem, i wold recommend getting your emissions system smoke tested.the parts after these simple diagnoses can get quite expensive depending on where you get them from, and as such, you'll only want to change the part thats causing the issue.
in short, yes, get it smoke tested.

Well guys I finally found out what the problem was with my vehicle. I took it to a gm service center instead of taking it back to the same guys as before. They ran a smoke test and smoke started rolling out of it. The idiots who put my fuel pump on didn't put a seal on it when they put the new one on. I am going this weekend to get my money back and if they dont pay then it looks like we are going to court lol. Just thought i would let you guys know. So kids dont do what i did and let any mechanic work on your car because they might just screw yah.
Peace
the inspection station that i went to said that i wass throwing this code
i was wondering if this could be whats causing my really random misfire at low rpms and loss of power through out
