Header Legal?!
Sunday, March 16, 2008 11:55 PM
Hey guy, I am n the process of fixing my car and decided to get a new performance header for my catback. I was wondering what headers would be street legal in VA for a 1999 Sunfire 2200? Thanks for your time guys, appreciate it!

Pacesetter is CARB certified, so it is 50-state emissions legal.

The majority of headers are going to be legal, the only state that's really an issue is CA.

yeah, around here you don't really have a choice, not that they care to look anyways, but since the engine compartment is not a locked compartment, they can take a peek. If the release had some kind of lock on it, then technically they would need a warrant to search the engine bay, but I don't know if that would necessarily stop them if they wanted to do it.

I have never had a cop check under my hood (nor known anyone who has) - which makes it a great place to stash things, lol.

Funny... I don't see a 95-97 header on that site.

Also:

http://www.iperformance.biz/faq/index.html#carb

Quote:

Are your headers legal in California?
California Air Research Board certification is an expensive and time consuming process for getting headers and other aftermarket parts legalized to pass visual inspection in California. That added cost would have to be passed on to the customer and headers would cost more than double what they do without CARB certification. Because of this, there are no headers for Cavalier, or Sunfire which have CARB certification, not from us and not from any other manufacturer. Our headers meet or exceed all emissions requirements and will have no problem passing emissions performance tests for tailpipe emissions.

They might want to redo that paragraph. I have the CARB cert tag on my Pacesetter which is required for sale in CA.

I know this is completely off topic, but they don't need a search warrant. They can legal search your car for whatever and whenever. Even if you get stoped for speeding they have the right to search your car. Sorry, but Jay-Z in the song, "99 problems" is wrong about the search warrant.

Anyways, back to the topic. Just call them up and ask them if it will pass your states emisions requirements. They are completely legal. Don't forget, if you fail the emisions test, just give the guy a 20 dollar bill and everything should be fine.
