im guessing its a 2.2 ohv
theres a guy onhere selling 2 trannys 5 speed for 150 i think ...... with 76 k on it ....thats worth it ....
thats not including alot of stuff u will need .... but its a dam good start if your serious
im in your boat .... i picked up a aem cai
manilfold back upgrade
short shifter for the 5 speed
motor n tranny mounts
Susp is a must ... d spec with sportlines or pro kit seems to be the choice of alot (soon for me)
or if this is not gonna be your daily .... think about a engine swap
34 35 36 3800 series motors can mount up to certin trannys used with our j bodies ...(not sure what ones)
u can also swap to alot of 4 cylinder versions too ... 2.2 ecotec would be the best way to go ....

all this is a conciderable amount of money if u dont kno how to do the work yourself and dont kno the people to get the deals from
let alone .... all the parts alone is a decent chunk itself ...
with that said ..... choose wisely on your set up ..... daily or not and branch out from there ....

Welcome to the JBO. If you are new to tuning cars, which you probably are, i would start with the basics first. here are some suggestions for engine mods and the order that i found best to do them in:
1.Tune-up:spark plugs/wires, air filter, oil change etc.
2.replace stock engine and tranny mounts with aftermarket mounts or stock oem ones for sure
3.open up the exhaust to let the engine breathe better: catback exhaust with 2 1/4 inch piping and a better flowing cat or a stock replacement cat for sure.
4.install an air intake to get some extra air into the motor. this mod will complement the cat-back nicely.
5.underdrive pulleys (my favorite bolt-on mod) this will free up a few horses by taking stress off of the crank and other accessories and will allow the engine to rev a little faster.
6.install a header, which is gonna be your best bang-for-the-buck. a header will also give you a nice and deep exhaust note. catbacks w/out headers usually sound like a pack of angry bumble bees

As for converting it to 5-speed, i would leave it be since your new to the tuning world.you don't gain much with these cars by swapping in a 5-speed, although many others will say differently. but take it from me, an auto will perform just as good as a stick. Manuals are more fun than auto though.

People say that what doesn't kill you in this life
will make you stronger. I'm not sure if that is true
or not, but i do know one thing-You have to learn from
it and it has to make you better.......it has to.......

5-speed is worth it. You'll free up a few lost hp and will get better fuel economy(if you dont beat the balls off it where ever you go). Strohlly7 forgot to mention about the LN2(2.2 OHV) head. It is very restictive. If you are serious about modding this engine at the very least get the head ported and polished. This will help the intake and exhaust mods. Its all about addressing the weak points and doing mods that support each other.

lol are the people that suggest converting it to a 5spd taking into account his ablities to do so? not saying there is anything wrong with having a shop convert it for you but at the point your better off buying a 5spd then converting it. it will save you lots of money and headaches

Even If he did convert to a five speed its not like anyone is advising him of replacing linkage, cluster gauges or panels along with the fact the you cant use the ECM/PCM of an automatic for a 5 speed. This kid is heading off on the wrong start. I agree with strolly7. Keep what you got especially until you know what you're doing.

OH YEAH.....AND I'M TAKIN ALL Y'ALL WITH ME IN A FIRST CLASS CABIN ON THE A$$
