hi, am wodering what is the best underdrive pulleys for a 1999 sunfire GT. and which pulleys have the best underdrive for street use.
Either under drive the crank or the alternator. Do not do both, or you will have charging issues.
Under drive crank go with the Unorthadox Crank or a HO quad four crank pulley. Not an Ebay or OBX knockoff.
Under driven alternator go with the AEM power pulley. There are two in the classifieds.
stock...try to find some I have sold. I'm sure a few will turn up in the classifieds soon.

Are z24's different or what? I ran both alt and crank with no charging issues what so ever, and I even ran a system as well.

well i took look at car it seems a crank pulley will be a massive pain to get in. it doesnt look like i can get one on unless i lift the engine. i looked it said that the unorthodox pulley adds 5-12 HP but i cant find what the Aem would do? would it do 8-10 hp?? if so i would go with the aem. it looks like i dont have to rip my engine out to put it on. also if i get a better alternater would that solve the chargeing probs? and then i could use both?? plz if any 1 knows whats the average gain for a aem pulley please tell it be helpfull. thx
you done have to take the engine out to get the pulley on.
take pass. wheel off.
remove inner splash shield.
you will see the pulley right there, remove serpentine belt.
remove center bolt on pulley.
use pulley puller and remove pulley.
slide new pulley on.
put bolt back on and tighten.
re-install splash shield.
put pass. wheel back on.
done.
yea thats what i though after i took second look thx u, but can i run both a alternator and crank pulley? wont a better alternator solve the chargeing probs that might happen? lol and i hit fence and dent the fender so i g2 put new splash shield and fender on that side of the car any way lol.
no, i did the exact same thing. i thought 'hey ill just get a bigger alternator and the charging issues will be solved after i have the UD crank and AEM alt pulleys on' nope, big mistake. the car wouldnt even RUN at idle because there was no charge, it would simply die. my alternator is a 180 amp, stock is 105. when i talked to the alt. shop when they made mine they said it would do every bit of 180 amps but it would suck at idle. and their statement was proven.
i put a stock alt. pulley on and it worked like that but i had a dead battery after sitting for a week without driving it and it was only charging 11.3 volts at idle, so basically, the car was running on the battery at idle when its supposed to run off the alternator.
my personal opinion... 5 speed car with no options, safe to run both pulleys with a stock alternator, better battery and the big 3 wiring upgrade. auto car with every option under the sun, STOCK SIZED PULLEYS OR YOUR GOING TO HAVE ISSUES. i did and hated it, trust me. the second i put on stock sized pulleys the charging issues ceased.
now, if you have a stock alternator i believe just running either the aem alt pulley or an UD crank pulley to be ok as long as before you shut the car off every time you rev the engine up to 2500-3000 and hold it there for a minute or so, that way the battery has a good charge and the car will start the next time you drive it.
