Hey everyone Proud owner of both a 99 sunfire and a 95 grand am. Im currently doing the 99 for my gf and my 95 had gone thru some changes over the times and i got pics later on to post(currently do the aed swap) but to the point im having some troubles that i cant find by searching and i figure heck, ill be stopping by more and more might as well join!
1) got a hid kit with the harness and relay from eurofx.com its the hi/lo version and i got this problem: the harness plugs into ONE factory headlamp connector, the other sits there unplugged. the relay has both + - hooked up to the red top with inline fuse/// both ballasts are grounded (sanded ground points, protected with silicone) and lights work awesome. so whats the problem? the 99 sunfire thinks there is a bulb out and crazy flicks the DRL's and also for some ODD reason the low beams are the brights ( the solenoid NOT engaged) and when u PULL the headlight lever BACK as if to flash someone, THEN the solenoids engage (making it LOW beam) and its only engaged until you fully click it into high beam, then even tho it shows high beam on, its the same as it was in low beam mode. sorry if that confused anyone, it confuses me as well
2) this is not that important but freaky/creepy. wtf is that black box plugged into a wire harness behind the linning in the trunk on the driverside??? maddd werid , no idea what its there for, should i unplugg that? this is a bone stock 99 sunfire no alarm no system no gps unit lol wtf is that? can i unplug it and thro it away so im not sketchin out??? lol
madd thanks to anyone that can help
also will caviler tails fit on the 99??
damn no hits yet? not even a welcome?? tsk tsk
If the 'Fire is a coupe, they won't fit. If it's a sedan, they'll fit.
As far as hid goes, I'd disable the DRL's and go from there...

thanks for the response and yupp 2 door coupe plus i got the high low thing figured out, dummies had used black for pos and red for neg on the solenoids and thats an American company too! so next, off to remove the drls what a pita to take off the whole upper dash?? damn.... any idea on the black box in the trunk?
I've read that it's the factory alarm/keyless entry system. Some cars have them even though they're not hooked up.
Just an FYI, not everyone is chomping at the bit to answer questions. Let your topic at least fall to the bottom of the first page before bumping it but, anyways, welcome to JBO
well i got most my answers about the damn thing from an outside source, just having a hard time figuring out the DRL cut out i have to take off the WHOLE dash?? wtf lol i dunno were to start anyways i guess HIDs with a relay are bad and ones that dont come with them are good in short. i dont think enought ppl have tried to swap and therefore there is not a lot of info on ppl success stories or failure stories out there yet but if anyone has done one on a sunfire please holla back im going to sell both my kits for 100 a piece on ebay

If you know someone at a GM dealership they can disable the drls with the tec2 scan tool under ipc functions or maybe its options. I did it this way when I used to work at chevy dealership. Or you could approach the bay door and offer one of the techs $20 to do it on the side.

Don't let the punks get to you. If they can't say anything helpful its because they probably
have VERY LITTLE IF ANY MECHANICAL SKILLS . Talking crap is just their way of hiding that
fact. They figure the more crap they say the less likley anyone will know how dumb they are.
thanks bro im gonna chck tht out this friday, i know my buddy works in the detail shop maybe he can get a tech to help me out props!!
Most techs dont actually know how to disable DRL's since they are not allowed to do it anyways. I took the time to figure out the correct way to do it (ie. no physical modification to the vehicle) and have disabled the DRL's in my 98 and 02. Dont bother asking me though cause im not going to spill teh beans so to speak. Those that know how to use a Tech II may know how its done.
yes, to answer ALL your questions concerning the wiring:
you need to disable the DRL, there is a sticky in the exterior forum about this I believe....if not there, try the electrical forum.
The reason the solenoid is backwards is because the J-s run on a negative switch, meaning you have +12v on both low and high beams at all times, until you turn them on.....then ground is given....not power.
This requires some creative re-wiring depending on your harness. USUALLY, you can switch the + and - terminals on the RELAY for the hi/low operation, and it will switch the functions for you. Once again, depending on the wiring harness, this may/may not work for you.
hey man ur advice rocks! i been messing around with stuff today and came to the conclusion that HID that use a relay S U C K lol! i called my buddy at eurofx and he said for me to get his kit, bc i have both kits for 9006/9005 from and those are plug and play and claims i can avoid all this trouble with type of HID kit. so i AGAIN re-wired everything back to stock and heat shrinked/ soldered etc... got a set of 9007's coming in! these china ones are junk, and htf was i supposed to knw? ebay is flooded with fools gold these days. thanks for the advice, it def worked and kept me busy for 4 hours today = )
tried to edit that post due to my lack of words/grammer i meant to say i have those 9005-9006 kits from that company for my 95GA and they look and operate perfectly i wanna post some pics but gotta get a photo etc...
HIDs that don't use relays are usually the kind that start things on fire. So I wouldn't say yours SUCK
