Make sure the e-brake is off, and use a big hammer!

use a bigger hammer. no, thats not big enough either. you're not thinking big enough. if it doesnt take two hands to pick up, it's not big enough.

aint that the truth.. i got lucky though mine wasnt too hard to get off.. especially when you hit it in a criss cross pattern from different angles

with the auto adjusting drums on our cars the pads wear a groove into the drum then get stuck in the groove when you try to take them off... the cure is like evryone said... Get a really big hammer

Actually i once had the same problem, one of the five holes on the drum was slightly larger, there was a sort of smal lock washer holding it on. Hammered at it until i was blue in the face, then my mechanic told to remove the washer thing, it slid right of after.

Thanks guys... i got it off, just hammed away at it. I got my dad to help me and he told me that you should never use WD 40 on brake drums because when it soaks into the shoe, it binds with the braking material and ruins it. Thanks again.

Sorry to play forum necromancer, but is there any way to get to the adjustment lever for the star wheel? I've found the star wheel itself by taking off the grommet closest to the center of the assembly, but no matter how much poking with a screw driver, I can't find the adjustment lever.

Yes, there's a hole behind the adjuster (or, there should be one). You should be able to get into it with a flat screwdriver and back the adjustment off. However you may still need to bang on the drum with a hammer a few times.

Well, I finally got both sides off. The rear left was easier with the help of an 8 lb sledge but the rear right was where I was having all the trouble. The tension spring (the W looking one) broke sometime last year so I had to crank the star wheel to get the adjuster really far in to get past the 3/32" groove that the worn shoe ground into the drum. Both brakes are done now.
