Okay i have owned my j, a 96 sunfire, for about a year i got it in a pinch after my other car finally bit the dust. i discovered this website and was really inspired by the d.i.y. attitude held by most everyone here(at least the ones who write something worth reading), i have previously been involved in linux and tube amp communities, so i have this mindset myself. that being said, i am stuck with tough choice, should i , for ease's sake, trade in my car for a newer j? i have a 96 w/an auto trans and want to do an egr delete, manual trans, head work, intake and exhaust to start at least. i guess my question is should i stick w/ what i have or trade in for a 99-00 ld9 or go ecotec? pros cons, experiences? sorry if i come off as a newb but i actually have been reading a lot for about a year just soaking it in. any good opinion is appreciated.
btw i don't get intimidated easy and i am pretty quick, i dont mind getting my feet wet just dont want to be in over my head
trade it in for a 2000+ or for a car already with an ecotec.
swap is much easier on 2000+ no welding required
Whoa! Tube amps? You and I are probably in the minority of those that even remember them. What was the year you saw your last Heathkit?
Gotta go with the other comment above. I love my '99, but if it ever goes by the wayside I'll get an '00 or later. - Mark
Hey now I'm not that old, i was talking about home built guitar amps, thou i bought a Heathkit oscilloscope in a garage sale w/ a blown out screen and hooked it up to a late 80 black & white rca with a twist on volume knob and dial tuner lol!!! my neighbor whom was an auto mechanic helped me alot on that one, i was fifteen.
Knew you weren't that old, just had to toss out the comment. (It's a little slow here at work today.) You probably don't want to know what I was working on at 15.
To get back on topic, what you do with the car also depends on availability and affordability. If a great late '99 donor car showed up cheap and you didn't mind the work, you could do it without cubic $$$. But then, if a pristine late LS Sport Eco showed up it would be mighty tempting. In either case, good luck. - Mark
It depends on what you want to spend.
I've seen some good deals on the 03+ J's.....
