Building your own............
Wednesday, April 28, 2010 5:27 PM
Ok, you know you are a noob when ..........

So I've desided I can't afford the 250 to 300 dollars for a wai or a cai. So I've been resurching on the web about building one of my own. I've seen some real outlandish ones ie PVC which does poor onder heat. But also I've thought of mabe making onde out of ven duct. Ie a 3in 2 foot piece with 2 swivel 90 degree and a 3in rubber cuppler drill hole for O2 sencor ect. Cheap build. Would it be legel tho. Oh also id use vent tape not duct tape for seams. Any thoughts. Ty

go to ebay
get the cheapest intake you can find
get a decent (i.e. k&n; AEM dryflow) filter
install, laugh at everyone who spends $300 on the same thing you just spend MAYBE $80 on.

an intake is simple man, its two parts. a tube, which has less bends, larger diameter, and smoother inside than stock, and a good flowing filter. that's it. that's all it will ever be. no need to drop big money on it.

Ie why I was looking into building one. I came up with the vent thing my self. The other sites were talken about using PVC and wraping with foil. Reguardless of what I do. Is building one om self legel. And no I'm not using PVC that's just dumb. Plastic under heat not good. Ty

Theyre trying to help you. Sure, you can build a cai or wai out of whatever you want. And the legality of it is going to vary by state. Any cop that sees tin foil wrapped around your engine bay is gonna cry bloody mary and ticket you, but they wont be popping your hood unless you give THEM the attitude you are HERE.

The sharp turns and multiple levels/diameters of the duct pipe you want to use will cause air flow that is less efficient than those of cheap ebay pipes. The reason for getting rid of the airbox is simply to create less distratactions for the air to your TB.

With that being said you can have a cheap intake pipe all ready to mount up shipped to your door for under 40 bucks usually. As your wonderful peers have so far mentioned, make sure you pick up a K&N or AEM Filter though. Cheap EBay filters can do harm.

Nobody's being a douch here. While your idea isn't terrible, we were simply suggesting something with more bang for your buck. Nobody is insulting your intelligence. Pinch your dick and repost!

The JBO isnt a site for legality question (even though many prove smart with that shtuff). Instead, the community knows what works with these cars. Above all, we all own J's. We know what budget building is like.

that was my first intake, looked like @!#$ and rubbed the hood big time. i would'nt recommend those. but that's just personal preference. even ebay has a better looking intake, and there's something to be said for that.

as has been said, go to ebay.

or just buy a short ram, as there's no difference while you're moving (which is when you want your intake charge cooler.
