I need BFG Drag Radial feedback from other racers
Monday, May 02, 2005 6:49 AM
I finally managed to get my car to the track to try out the new BFG G-Force Drag Radials on Saturday. Too bad it was a regular Summit Super Series points day, so I only got 2 time runs to try to figure them out, unlike at a Test-N-Tune night.
I did manage to beat my best 60 ft time ever (2.147 on street tires in 1995), with a 2.13 and a 2.11, but I am not seeing the corresponding improvement in ET. I have been told that if you improve your 60 ft my .10, you should see approximately .15 improvement in your ET.
Here's what I was doing: 17 lbs pressure in the BFGs, 35 lbs in the rear tires. Hold the car in the burnout box with the E-Brake until I see smoke coming over the passenger's side fender, release brake, and ease out of the gas to come forward (no long smoky burnouts are necessary on them from what I've heard). I was launching at 2000 rpm as a starting point. I'm sure that the car could handle a little more, but I don't want to be breaking anymore axles, or frying the clutch just yet.
If I can be cutting consistent 2.0, or very low 2.1 60 fts, I will be happy. I just want to figure out why the ETs were basically the same as they were on street tires in the past.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I have never ran on those drag radials before, but run on Nitto's. You are launching too low. Those tires hook very good, and you are getting god 560ft, but not luanching hard enough to get better than you should. You should be pulling 1.9's with a nice 3000-3500 RPM launch. I'm sure your MPH fell a lot as well. You are bogging the motor down.

launching waaaaay to low, I am with John, they should handle anything you throw at them to about 3500 rpm, if you start launching at higher than that you will get too much wheel spin then.

Yeah I'd say try launching higher. A friend in a basicly stock neon can launch at 5000rpm without wheel spin. Just get some more practice with them and launch just under the point where they will slip.

What size rim are you running them on? And how much did you get them for?

Yeah Jake, replacing that bolt will definitely help! I guess a little corrosion (ok, maybe more than a little), and a hard launch, have a way of shearing off bolts that attach the seat to the floorboards! I KNOW I'D NEED A TOW TRUCK if I had you drive it at the track! I will give you credit though, you MIGHT actually drive the ol' girl faster than me. Maybe once I rebuild her, and elimate the "weak links" that I know you would find, we'll see.

I guess based on the info I'm getting, I will have to try a harder launch. I don't feel comfortable jumping right up to 3500, but I'll give 2500 a try and go from there. I really don't think the engine felt like it was bogging (I've felt that before), but maybe it was minor. I guess we'll see!

I am running the BFGs on 15" stock steel wheels (tires are 205/60R15)

Well, just came back from the track. I learned that the BFG's need to be aired down more than I'm comfortable with. A couple SRT-4 guys were running them tonight too, and cutting 1.8 second 60' times with the tires aired down to 14 psi. I was a weenie and wouldn't go below 17, plus I was a bit of a weenie for launching at 3000 rpm.

Almost every FWD I have seen regardless of power level is in the 4000-4500 on launch with drag radials. The sweetness of it is that wheel spin is almost totally controlable with the throttle. That's a hard balancing act with regular street tires.

Don't been a weenie , launch at 4000rpm and air them down... seems 15-12psi works best, depending on size.

I Agree with Anthony,

I run 205/50/14 and run them at 11psi with about 3800rpm launch, and i 60' in the 2.0's
