Took my 99 z24 up to New England dragway on Friday night. I was pretty dissapointed with my times, though it was'nt bad for a first timer.
I have catback exhaust and AEM short ram intake.
out of 3 runs my best time was:
RT .550
60' 2.369
330' 6.866
1/8 10.652
1000' 13.9
1/4 16.7 @79.8
I know i could have done better. I did beat the 96 jetta i was racing, he had a 17.4. My other 2 passes i did'nt do a burnout and just ended up getting some nasty wheel-hop on launch, so that sucked. I think i should be running at least high 15s.
My best run I launched at 3000-3300 rpms and had 34 psi in the pirelli p7000s. I shifted at about 6000 for 1-2 and maybe 5600 for 3-4. should i just wind the piss out of the 2.4 or is there a loss of power at high RPMs? Practice makes perfect and i plan to go back and try to get theses times down a bit, but any advice you people (especially those with 2.4s) have would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
Steve

your car is capable of a way better time than that. I have a 96 sfgt that runs between 15.5 and 15.7 every run. Your 60' time could use some improvement, but it is not that bad. when i cut a 2.3 i usually run 15.7.
I also don't know if winding your car out over 6k rpms is the best thing, i believe our peak hp is at lower rpms, but im not sure.
work on your launch and start cutting some 2.20's
yeah i have a 96 Z24 and i run 15.4-15.5 usually my best is a 15.3
what RPM do you guys normally launch at?
I only ran three times, so i could'nt get a good feeling for what the best launch point is. Seems like above 3 grand and i get some wheel hop and that just kills your run.

My '99 Z ran 15.4's stock, just practice practice practice!

My ole 2.2 runs 10.3's all night long with 17's on! (1/8) You could do better!!
Your trap speeds are poo
O noes!
were you pushing the gas?
how many miles are on your car?
do you have oil in it?
did you run out of gas? dude these times are really horrible.
wind it out to just before the rev limiter on all your gears... the only time you might wanna shift earlier is on the 1-2 shift. fist gear is going to spin, so control it with your clutch, then as soon as the tires bite, 1st gear is going to run out very quickly, so you might want to shift slightly earlier so you dont hit rev limit.
always wind it out especially on the top end... thats probably why your traps are so low, and your e/t sucks ass
car has 83000 miles on it. Oil could use a change. i had 3/4 of a tank of gas.
I think i just need to work on my launch. Like I mentioned, when i did'nt smoke the tires I got horrible wheel hop on launch. When I did smoke em, i still got wheel hop but better to do it before the start of the race then at the start of the race. Also im thinking I was paying to much attention to the other car. Once I was ahead of him I kinda laid off a bit. I think i shifted 4th at about 5000-5200 rpm when i should have just kept it going to 6000.
What do you guys think is the optimum RPM to launch at?
Do you guys smoke the tires before staging?
maybe i should lower the tire pressure a bit?
These times should improve with a few more trips to the drags, but I'm in no hurry. This is my daily driver and I still need to drive it to work and whatnot. After I left the drags I went on a road trip to the northernmost point of NH (right near canada) and had a blast. I put about 500 miles on it in one day. I have more fun cruising around and seeing how lost I can get than seeing how fast I can go in the 1/4, but these times are downright dispicable and I will do better next time. My friend has a 1991 chevy 454SS pickup that he took down to the drags 2 weeks ago and his best was 15.1 @86mph. If I could give him a run for his money then I will be satisfied.
thanks for the tips.

Burning out on street tires wont help you out...they aren't made of the right compound to do this... Launching your car is the hardest thing you will do in the 1/4mile.. once you have that down then your times will drop slightly... and if that was your first time out don't be to disappointed... a buddy of mine took his new Honda S2000 to the track for his very first time and ran about the same times as a stock Z24 or GT would do lol
Supercharged 2.4L
Even street tires need to be spun a little to clean off the dirt. Air them down to about 26-28 psi or so, do a short burnout (NO WATERBOX!) and stage. If you see smoke during your burnout, you're burning way too long. Just a couple revolutions of the tire is all you need, unless you have high performance tires like Falkens. I found that both my Yokohama ES 100's, and my Falken's both liked longer burnouts. But again, DO NOT go through the waterbox, that'll kill your 60' time on street tires quicker than sh!t. But judging by your trap speeds, your lanch isn't the only area that needs work. You need to be shifting at 6000 rpm or somewhere around there. And actually, the 2nd to 3rd shift should be held off til about 6200 rpm. That nasty gap in gearing leaves you playing catch up unless you rev the piss out of 2nd. And try not shifting to 4th, see if that helps. I was running 15.4's a @ 89 mph going through the traps in 3rd gear.
