first runs at the track with 05 Sunfire

took my 2005 Sunfire down to Cecil on Wed night to see what it could do. boy do i need some practice. it wasnt easy going from nothing but RWD cars to trying to race this FWD one. but anyway...

first run shifting at 6300rpms was a 16.27 at 87.1mph w 2.5 60ft. i shifted into 4th just before the traps

2nd run was 16.25 again shifting at 6300. mph was 86.1 w another 2.5 60ft. this time i didnt lift and hit the limiter right as i crossed the line (indicated by my lower mph)

for my final run i got a worse 60ft (2.6) but i tried 6000rpm shifts instead. not only did i miss 3rd this time out, but i shifted into 4th again just before the finish line. ET was STILL 16.2 somehow with all the misshaps, and mph was a low 81 (due to the missed shift)

this time out was pretty much a learning experience. next time i will be shifting at 6k instead of 6300. i will also be putting on a slightly taller tire (205/70R15s) so i can keep it in 3rd while crossing the traps. gotta work on my launching too. i believe the car has a mid - high 15 in it... just gotta figure out how to let it out

Hit a 2.2 60' and you'll see some 15.6 second timeslips.....

I ran my stock 04 sunfire with 17" rims last night and my best was 16.130 shifting at redline....With a 2.363 60 ft.

tony,

your times sound about the same as mine the first time i took my 2004 cavalier. the first thing i went after is the poly bushings, and a set of BFGoodrich Drag Radials. Upper and Lower motor mounts, Control arm bushings, and Front and Rear tranny mounts.

That should break you into the 15.7's to 15.9's, depending on your launch.

If you have any questions, give me a shout

i KNOW the car has more in it than a 16.2 at 87mph. it was my lack of skill piloting FWD at the strip that made it a pig

i found it strange than even though i got a worse 60ft AND missed a gear on my last run, i still managed a 16.2 ET. this leads me to believe that the Ecotec motor likes the 6000rpms shifts i was doing on that run rather than shifting at redline like the previous 2. anyone have a dyno graph of an bone stock Ecotec motor so i can plot where gear changes should be?

also, i was noticing that i was running out of gear just before the traps. however, it was 3rd gear. isnt 4th supposed to be your 1:1 ratio in 5speeds or is it different for this particular gearbox? if 4th is indeed 1:1, then there are some TALL gears installed in the stock diff

so it looks as though im gonna play with my shift points, and install a taller tire next time i go down. unfortunatly, i cannot do anything about wheel hop at this time. im just gonna have to go easy on my launches for now and jusy hope i can come up with some decent 60fts

Why don't people listen. The Higher the octane the HARDER TO BURN!

Anyways, you'll get the hang of launching the car. Maybe 2300 rpms drop clutch. let off gas to stop wheel hop.

And the times in my reg. were run at 90+/- degrees F.

Also times vary depending on track. sooo....

I was proving a point to my buddies with the gas.we got gas before we left for the track. and i had no wheelhop. and i left at 4000 slipping the clutch a bit.if i left any lower the car would hook hard and fall on it's face. my buddie in his cobra ran a 12.442 at 113

i don't know where you all learned to launch, but i myself suck at launching and can pull 2.2 60fts. my fastest time with that is a 15.4, and all i have(had) was an intake. so you all need to find some back roads and practice your launches or something. =)

i also think shifting at 6000 is the best, i've shifted at a few different points and it seems 6k is the best.

don't forget to air down your front tires for wider footprint and better grip. and take out any extra weight in the car, like those heavy systems and spare tires (and go on a diet if necessary)

btw i have an 05 1sv cavalier 5 speed.

good luck, keep trying.

c'mon guys you can do better than that.

a 2.5 60foot? what were you eating a sandwich?

I can cut low 2.3s in my OHV, with my best ever being a 2.2 on crappy tires...

launch near peak torque, and feather the clutch to keep tire slippage to a minimum. Dont just drop it, this isn't a burn out contest.

I say low 15s if you can manage a near perfect launch and nail all your shift points.

also, dont push the clutch in all the way when shifting, only down to the engagement point... it'll keep the trans and engine engaged slightly so when you shift to the next gear the mesh won't be as violent, and the next gear will engage pretty smooth, and the shift will be faster.

^^^be careful shifting like that, ive tried and it almost @!#$ stuff up lol....honsetly my cars slow, saving that ltitle bit of time to me isnt worth ruining my car...if i had something faster id do it

you just need to get your 60's down....go to a parking lot and try different stuff, whatever feels fast without a bunch of wheels hop, or not boggin it down try the next time ur at the track, dont just drop the clutch, and dont ride it to long, there is a perfect balance that you will be able to feel if you do it just right....

i pull faster 60 foots then you did, ive almost had a 2.3, and im only running 16.8-17.1's in a 2.2 OHV....if you can get that down pat you have 15's easy
