Bracket Racing.....your thoughts

i guess ill post this here.
those who drag race, what are your thoughts on bracket racing? is it awesome? or gay like some people think?
and what would you rather do? bracket or heads up? and why?

on friday i finally won the sport compact class at Beaver Springs dragway in PA.
i won myself a free pass for next friday, a free pass for the Hot Rod Thorphy class that Beaver has on the IHRA Sunday show, a free pizza, Eliminator Sticker to place on my car or anywhere i choose, and a 24 inch tall Trophy. pretty cool i think

I love bracket racing. You have to be consistent and have a good reaction time. You will never beat a twin turbo vette in a heads up race, but you can spank him in bracket racing. A lot of people have horrible reaction times, at least where I race at. It is nice to head up drag race, but I rather bracket race any-day.

Its more of you and your car vs. yourself and the other person. I think it is more challenging if the other people you race have good reaction times and a good dial-in time...meaning they run very close to their dial-in time.

bracket racing is fun, but it is kinda lame to think that an 18 second automatic pickup truck actually has the biggest advantage... I won the fastest bracket class at Waterfest last year and I was also one of the slowest in the class... I mean, its fun, but at the same time, you build your car to be faster to have the advantage in a race, and then bracket racing essentially takes that advantage away... all a fast car does is get you into a faster class, but then your dial in and the headstarts equals things out between you and your class members. For the occasional bit of fun, its cool, but i couldn't do it all the time because it would really piss me off to break out and lose because i went faster than i should have... Faster than i should have? At a track? Its an oxymoron dammit!

i actually had this conversation at work today....

bracket racing is okay, if you're not racing for bragging rights. i could go against his fox body mustang and beat him in bracket racing, but not head to head. sure, i could go around saying "i beat derek's mustang!" but it doesn't carry the same credibility as if you were to beat him head to head. i will admit that bracket racing requires a little bit more skill to remain consistant, but nothing beats the bragging rights from head to head racing,

Bracket Racing is more Driver SKILL than the car......its like 75% driver and 25% car. i've been competitively bracket racing for 10 years. Love it been on both angles won the street Points championship in a 16.5 @83mph automatic 91 Z24 then won the Pro ET (10.00-13.99) class championship in a 11.30@118mph nova it more depends on how well you can drive if your going to win or not. and you have to learn all the tricks

Yea i do quite will at bracket racing. In 2 racing seasons i won 6 trophies ( 1 1st, and 5 3rd) when i only competed 8 times in those 2 seasons.

Personally i prefer bracket over head-to-head because i have a 16 second car (16.005) and i actually have a chance to do well. With an automatic it is definatly a big help with being consistant, and i am very consistant. I usually dial in and am within a hundreth of my dial in and my average reaction time is .600, where my best is .503. I definatly agree with VIPERREDZED that is more driver skill than how much time an money you put into your car. Cause you could have a 10-second car, but if you can't drive it consistantly then its worthless.

Most cars are too slow to win heads up and too inconsistent to win at the brackets. At least everyone has a chance in the brackets. I bracket race almost every weekend.

the last time i was at the track in my 5 speed Z i did 8 runs between 15.42 and 15.48

one day in my Drag car 72 nova i did 15 runs that day and all of them were between 11.688 - 11.704 my average reaction time is around a .520ish

I am on the same page as VIPERREDZED here, been racing brackets for 7 years now and just love it! Well I love competition actually.I'dlove to race heads up but all in all I dont have a pocket book deep enough for heads up racing.
Brackets is driver, and at entry level all you need to do is race yourself not the other guy. Hita good light and get your dial, then the more experiance you get you'll pick up the ins an outs of bracket racing.

I do however love competitive racing. Bracket is where I can excell. The people I race are great and its not what kinda car you beat or how fast of a car either. The braggin rights come down to who you beat! Its nice to go from being happy just to beat last years champ one round, to now being the one people brag about beating!

Bracket racing is the best. Its cool cause it levels the playing field and the advantage actually goes to the better driver not the better car.

Its pretty boring to sit in the stands and see a twin turbo camaro or whatever race this N/A honda heads-up. You know the outcome already. For it to be fun it has to be close and bracket racing makes it happen.

Bracket racing. I had a ton of fun with it. Like already said, not many cars are competitive in heads up. I used to drive a Geo Tracker. I would never think of taking it to a drag strip to run heads up, but I bracket raced on occasion and managed to win a few times. It doesn't matter how slow or fast a car is, it's all about consistency. I'll agree, though, it does seem a little against the mindset to see a ten second whatever lose to a little econobox that barely hits 70 by the time it crosses the finish line.

Bracket racing in my view is the autocross of drag racing. So much more is driver dependant.

Now if you like bracket and drag racing. Check out the Pro Solo series. Drag race start, autocross course, then usually a straight line finish.

In my own opinion, bracket racers are probably some of the most talented drivers in all of drag racing. You have to drive both ends of the track and the team with the biggest budget isn't going to necessarily dominate. Where else could you possibly make a living racing with a low-dollar stock street car? I know of a gentleman from Mississippi who a few years ago traveled to a dragway in North Carolina in his Cavalier and won $20,000. If I remember correctly, he won about $42,000 last year bracket racing his Z24.

If I had an unlimited budget and could race anything, I'd still be bracket racing.

Thanks,
