Ecotec Times with Auto trans
Monday, May 29, 2006 11:51 AM
Hey whats up every one, I just got back from Great Lakes Dragaway yesterday and I only ran my car once that day >.> but any ways. I did a time I wasent to proud with witch is 16.623. I just installed pacesetter header and magna flow cat and 2.1/4 piping and 62 mm trottle body before this. But when I only had just a intake , motor mounts and a muffler I did a 16.312. Is a 16..6 good for a ecotec with a auto trans?

R/T .550
60 2.415
330 6.982
1/8 10.698
MPH 65.57
1000 13.875
1/4 16.623
MPH 82.22

Is this good for a auto trans and let me know what some of you guys with auto trans have done.

I'd say its pretty good, but the one thing I wouldn't have done is put the bigger throttle body on because it supposedly lowers the power slightly and lowers the torque even more. I'm not 100% sure though since there haven't been any proven dyno charts. I'd post my times but I haven't even been to a track yet, let alone a dyno, lol.

next time i go to the track im going to have both trottle bodies and try both and compare times

That is not a good time for the mods you have . Something is wrong. Could have been the heat.

16.166 was my best last year with just the k&n intake. and to top that off my car was full of crap and had over half a tank of gas. the rest of the slip is in my profile. i plan to be quicker than that in the next week or two with the same mods

yea I think some thing is wrong, I knw i had a full tank of gas and that day was really hot
Wwould better spark plugs help? what about the rsm pully? would any of those help?

I understand what Chad Jackson is talking about, I was running down a stretch of highway with a friend of mine, he has quiet a few mods done to his 03 Cavi, all I have is an intake, and I was hangin with him the whole way. He did say that he did try lose me when I got hung up in traffic, but I made my way out of the traffic and caught him. He was stupified about it. Gotta love the ECO.

16.4 here with basically same mods cept stock tb and a b/m shiftplus. Plus some reduced weight, it depends alot also on where youre located. Its unfair to compare times from a track with a higher elevation compared to one thats at sea level. Id say your time is about right want better times gonna hafta get some bigger mods.

i myself ran a 16.4 in my auto bone stock cavy....so that could be close enough

what were the conditions outside?

Well it was really hot at great lakes drag way sunday. And I do have the b&m shift plus kit and i had it on the seconed setting. I had my kyb ajustables shocks and struts on. the fronts was on 3/4 and rears was set on 6/8. ( the higher number being the stiffer setting) Well I know when I ordered spark plugs for it the ones that came was ngk laser platinums and some one told my that those plugs was cooler then normal. could that be a problem? What spark plugs u guys recomend for a n/a ecotec

put a shift kit on it. Go on a cooler day. Minimum weight as possible . brake torque it to launch better , try and hold it past 2 k if you can. Some higher octane fuel may help a bit. And the one thing you cant control is track condition. I have no problem pulling 2.0 60 foot times with boost here at route 66 in Joliet IL. But that is a killer track for hooking up. Good luck man. worst comes to worst just boost it .

Well To let u guys know a update. I went to route 66 race way in jolet, il. and the weater was cool. this is what I did. I swaped my weapon r foam dragon filter for a k&n filter and I put in the botch platinum +4 spark plugs in and the also I put the stock trottle body back on. And this is my time.

R/T..... .434
60'...... 2.397
330.....6.850
1/8.....10.504
mph...67.51
1000..13.676
1/4......16.406
mph...81.07

Then I put on the rsm 62 mm trottle body and this is what I ran

R/T.... .148
60'..... 2.354
330....6.760
1/8....10.370
mph. 69.24
1000. 13.529
1/4......16.243
mph... 83.70

The old spark plugs look like they was on there last legs lol.
So what u guys think

A few of quick questions,

Are you getting any wheel spin off the line? If so how much? Just a chirp or more?
Are you running the stock wheels and tires( Goodyear Eagle RSAs)? What are you tire pressures, front and rear?
Do you roll through the water box?

From you time slip, it looks like you might be able to knock about a tenth or so from you 60' times. Typically a tenth saved off the line equals a couple tenths at the top end. This also depends on the track prep.

A few tips, if you arn't already doing them.

The RSAs are a hard compound tire and don't hook very well. Get a softer compound street tire, if you can(unless you want drag radials).

Air you tires down to no less than 25psi(on street radials) and air up the rears to about 3-5 psi below max pressure listed on their sidewalls. The front pressure can vary depending on the amount of traction and tread flexability, but 25psi is typically good. The lower pressures help the tire conform to the track surface, anything lower and the belts in the tire will cause the tire to cup the contact patch. The increased rears reduces the rolling resistance. Bring a portable air tank to reinflate your tires when your done and keep a good dial air gauge to keep track of your pressures.

Go around the water box, unless you running drag radials or slicks. The water will only make street tires slick. I've seen up to 2/10 saved from going around the water box on a 2.4L J-body.

Don't do a burn out on street tire, only a quick dry hop to scrub the tire clean. Big smokey burn outs only make the street compounds slicker.

The adjustable struts are only rebound adjustable, both KYB and Koni. You want to control the weight transfer to the rear. Adjusting the struts can control some of this weight transfer. You say you are running 3/4 front and 6/8 rear. Try going up on the front and down on the rears. What this will do is make the struts more resistant to lift in the front, to keep the front planted better, and allow the rears to shift the weight forword during the very breif pause during the shift. This wont be quite as noticeable, unless you getting wheel spin during your shifts, which I haven't seen too many Js doing very often.

Keep brake torquing, get as high up on your torque converter as you can. Lauch at the highest rpm you can with out getting wheel spin/hop. A chirp or slight squeel is okay, anything more is wasted energy.

As for the plugs, the stock AC Delco Platinums are about the best plug for the money. The fancy multi tip plugs, actually block the flame front in the combustion chamber, they may make it idle better, but when you need a fast moving flame(as in high rpms), they just block the flame front. remember, the air fuel charge dosn't explode(unless your detonating, not good), it burns at a controled rate(just very fast).

BTW, the K&N filter is a much better choice, than the cheap foam filter.

Hope this helps. Keep us posted. Good luck.
