new times for the skwirl... well kinda

so after some modifications (HPT tuning and full exhaust and new suspension and new crap 70 series tires) the skwirl hits the track on a decent day

here are my slips

2.329
6.413
9.789
72.81mph
12.670
15.097
92.89mph

.298
2.239
6.306
9.668
40.94mpg (? speed musta f'd up)
12.530
14.953
92.91mph

I have a few more 15.0 and 15.1 slips and another 14.9 but its int he car and I don't feel like getting it

all in all, the exhaust is making more power, but I think I lost torque (slower 1/8 and less mph) but gained in the top end (same e/t but +2-3mph trap speeds) DUH

with these promising results, I continue modyifying all motor but will be boosted hopefully by the end of the year. Next will be cams to better take advantage of my higher RPMs

I still can not get out of the hole worth a damn, but my 60' times were a bit better than lately today. I hope that I can get a really good run on a cold day in late september and get a low 14.8 the trap speeds definetly support that time

comments?

Wow im definately impressed, is your body style lighter than the 03-05? or is it that tune that is giving you the faster times? i have intake, exhaust, motor mounts, trans mounts, suspension, various other things but cant pull faster than a 15.8. it sucks ha ha.

Is yours a base model , or an LS sport?

Pj's car is/was a OHV Basel Model. Probally one of the lightest cavaliers except for the 1SV package for the 03-05s.

tis true I have a truly unique set up

2002 base model with an ecotec engine. Such a thing as far as I know, does not exist outside other swappees and the like

base model Jbodies average 2500lbs actual curb weight without driver. Some minor weight reduction (removing spare tire & jack) fully loaded LS sports can weigh up to 300lbs heavier

as an example (and not to steal any of his thunder) but my buddies LS sport with the same level of modification I am at right now (intake, exhaust, minor ignition advance) was running 15.5s / 15.4s @ 88 or 89mph if my memory serves me correctly... not too sure on the trap actually

my car is consistently .5 quicker and 2-3mph faster with the same amount done. The weight makes a huge difference on the time slip.

also, with HPT, I don't have to shift into 4th gear anymore. I can hold 3rd and make it past the beam before hitting my 7000rpm rev limiter

I have been stabbing in the dark with tuning since i lack necessary gauges, but when I do get them (this coming week the order is being placed) I will finally be able to do some concrete tuning and see some (hopefully) massive results.

that, and if I can get a 2.0 60' like I should be getting, you will see an intake/exhaust/flywheel/clutch jbody go 14.79 @ 93mph

how can you go almost to 7000 rpm, do you have anything done to the head to support those kind of rpm's?

Re: new times for the skwirl... well kinda
Saturday, August 19, 2006 5:07 PM
nope

I don't go almost, I hit 7000 on a daily basis

the highest RPM i've ever logged was 7133 after I hit the limiter

the only time i really let it ring out tho is for the top of 3rd since i'm coming up to the line. But the valvetrain is more than strong enough to support another 500rpm over stock revlimiter

power does drop off but a head port and performance cams will better utilize higher rpm, as well as eliminating spark ramp out

^^^^so true, the power of port and polish

cams or headwork and cams will be next on my to do list

the car is coming along nicely and with some real tuning i should see a much faster mph and lower e/t

yeah mine is a base model 04 5 spd. i was just curious, and i have everything out i could without stripping panels and all that jazz. Nice numbers anyway though.

try seafoam through the vacume hose. you might have a bit of carbon build up.

see ya!

Yo man great runs. Where you at Atco by chance? I was the only red srt there. Haha my first time ever at a track plus also running i did horrible. My best was a 14.8 ant 98.90.

no you build up carbon deposites in the ring lands over time causing the rings not to seat and seal the combustion chamber as good as they could. you also build up carbon in the valve seats and valves, try it! it's a 5dollar shot that will pay off a bit. you will notice the car pulls much harder with clean ring packs.

see ya!

I would never use seafoam in an eco. cheesecake did it and it smoked his motor and blew up.

aren't you going turbo anymore ?

15.574 @ 89 mph stock without charger. new times with charger coming soon.
Re: new times for the skwirl... well kinda

^ yes

its only a question of when and how extreme the motor will be right away

I'm back to turbocharging the stock bottom end engine but since I'm back on par with where it should be n/a I'm going to try and climb the group A ladder before moving on to group B (referencing the top 10 list sticky in this forum)

ported head, cams, throttle body, possibly an intake manifold (if i can find one that truly flows better), and a good tune should get me around 160-170whp on stock bottom end. With a built head I may push my revlimiter to 7500 or higher to better take advantage of lift/ duration. The cams I'm going to be using are from LZM.. the triflows which can be used for n/a and then retimed to be used for turbo. So, we'll see what happens.. I know what I want, but I do product research as I go.

Right now I'm focusing on trying to get my gauge situation taken care of so I can really use HPT

If you used to pull 2.0 second 60' times regularly, the problem may just be that you have not altered your launch technique to fit the new torque curve. Picture your torque curve looks exactly the same, but just change the numbers at the bottom of the graph to read about 300 rpm higher than they used to. You may have to launch higher, which will also take a more delicate approach to the way you manipulate the clutch.
Re: new times for the skwirl... well kinda
Sunday, August 20, 2006 10:42 AM
^^I dunno I launch at 4000 as it is

but on that note, I do have more advance ignition timing during a launch since I copied my HO advance over my LO advance table.. therefore I might be making a bit more horsepower than expected, which is why I constantly spin out of the hole

I'm gonna drop my launch rpm by 500 to 3500 and see if that helps control the power off the line.

we'll have to wait for results until next track session. I also just got the autometer DPSS level 2 shiftlite gauge so that should help me to NOT hit my limiter anymore, and solidify my launches since it has a launch RPM indicator
