For you midwest drag racers out there
Thursday, December 21, 2006 3:21 PM
Just giving some Midwest drag racers out there a heads up of a newer racing series. We are entering our 3rd year and are expanding to 4 more tracks for our 2007 season. Hopefully some of you will attend. Check out our site www.imsmracingseries.com for any info on classes and also payouts.

Thanks

IMSM Racing Series Co-Director

Illinois ?Midwest? Street Machines

The Illinois ?Midwest? Street Machines (IMSM) are ready to kick off their third season of racing action in 2007 with the opening race to be held at Byron Dragway in Byron Illinois this April.

The primary objective of IMSM is simple, we wanted to create a series in which all racers of every make and model can be treated equal. We willingly open our doors to members of the drag racing and road racing communities. Our events are designed around all levels of racing enthusiasts. Our ultimate goal is to establish a standard and mark our place in the racing community that welcomes everyone to come and participate in our motorsports events.

To support these ideas IMSM has established 2 main racing classes Street and Pro, each of which has its own sub classes to accommodate racers of all levels. While designing the classing system special attention was made to make sure all racers could participate in a level they could be competitive in and allow them to advance to the next class relatively easy as their cars became faster. Our Street class offers 5 levels of Heads up racing and 1 Bracket racing class, and our Pro Series offers 3 levels of Heads up Racing with some of the fastest street cars the sport has to offer. What makes this combination unique is the drivers are classed by there own potential. With IMSM its driver vs. driver, not car vs. car

Using this formula for class designation members of IMSM no longer have to worry about conforming to strict class rules that may exclude them for the smallest items, nor due they have to worry about losing out to drivers with faster cars and larger budgets. Our goal is to match up the drivers in the class that best fits their cars and their abilities on the track. The Street division offers the novice racer or racer with a stock car the ability to start out in a bracket class, while others with faster cars and more experience have the ability to compete in any of the 5 heads up classes all the way to the Street Dominator class (SD). SD is the first regulated class in IMSM and the stepping-stone into the Pro Division. The Pro Division offers 3 classes for the Top dogs of the sport with their 7-8 second wheel standing race machines to fight it out in heads up battle. Each class was designed to be a stepping-stone into the next class allowing the racer to advance as they feel comfortable to.

The 2007 season of IMSM is scheduled to span 8 races throughout Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana with stops at Byron Dragway, Cordova Dragway, Great Lakes Dragway and U.S. 41 Dragway.

Heard you guys had some issues with attendance in 2006. This true?

If so how did that effect payouts?

I used to race cars, now I race myself.

not true in fact some races we pulled in more racers then in 2005. We avereaged between 60-65 racers per event. Some racers did drop out if they missed a race due to our old points system but regardless our over all attendence for the year went up by a good percentage. Next year we have a new points system and also traveling to 3 more tracks so if anything our attendence will go up.

New points system and new locations to go racing plus our press release has sparked interest in some potential sponsors.

Thanks

interesting... i probably wont race for points or anything, just for fun but good to know what dates they could be. I am an autocrosser at heart and i think some of those dates are the same as auto x. so i will be auto xing.

I'll see you at GLD. Not racing unless something drastic happens...like I find a grand lying around.

My only pushback on this, is it caters to RWD cars, as performace increases..

FWD cars have never, ever been able to maintain the same narrow "package" throughout an event.

It's a waste of money, except for guys running low HP FWD cars that can't turn a tire on the starting line, assuming a driver that is brutal on the tree.

Add a single FWD class with no ET limit. Perhaps watch a slower FWD car win it most every event, but who cares as long another twenty cars show up.

Hey Ross, thanks for posting this. I may have to check this out this year, especially since you will be at GLD a few times. If it is a good time I may even try to make an event or two at the other tracks, since I have been to all of the ones you will be at before, and they are a reasonable trip from Madison, WI.

I do see Mike's point that this tends to cater to RWD cars, based on the ET "indexes" in the heads-up classes. There aren't a ton of 12.50 FWD racers out there (no offense meant to those of you who are running these times, but there are few of you).

I do have to somewhat disagree with Mike on his point of FWD cars never being able to maintain that "narrow package" throughout an entire event, unless they are low HP cars that can't spin their tires on the line. I do understand his point about an advantage going to bone stock FWD car with a skilled driver. Bret Kepner of TV and magazine fame was known to show up at big money bracket events with any old automatic trans rental car, and clean alot of people's clocks. He was wicked on the tree, and since the cars had little power they wouldn't spin off the line. Heck, I broke my Sunbird at a points event once, and my buddy loaned me his daughter's Dodge Stratus. The car ran high 17s all day long, but it was CONSISTENTLY slow. I cut good lights in it and won the Street Class and $250.

My point of disagreement is that the right driver can be consistent in the right FWD car. My Sunbird isn't exactly fast compared to his, but on at least 6 occasions over the years I have run matching back-to-back passes to the thousandth of a second (with a 5-speed manual). There have been a number of times that I don't vary my dial-in by more than a few hundredths throughout the day. Once I drop my new "NA race engine" in this year, I should be in the low to mid 14s, and I bet I will be able to do it again. Even with the tired ol' 3.1 with 152,000 miles on it now, I need Drag Radials to prevent spinning off the line, or having to launch at too safe an RPM. Just my two cents (by the way, I hope to see you at GLD for plenty of Import Wars events this year Mike!)

I wouldn't mind seeing you add a FWD class if enough cars showed up to justify it though. Please think about it.

Hello Joe!

Every class except one (street fighter) has a .400 pro tree. I guess all the FWD cars would lump in there, and enjoy racing the Summit Series "street" class cars. I was looking at it from that perspective.

It's unclear what type of cars the Street Compact class is aimed at. The rules are identical to Street Heat.

We should go test early next year for some Pro Tree racing.... It should be entertaining and humbling at the same time.... $50 says you can't get the Sunbird under a .600 bulb, even staging deep, really deep.

Looking forward to '07 and having the car out for the IW series at Great Lakes.

I understand your guys points of views on this but how can you say there is no class for you or it catters to RWD cars?? A index is a index weather you FWD,RWD or AWD there is no rules you build a car to run what you want it to run. There will be 3 to 4 heavly modded 4 banggers running the 10.50 class and Street Compact was changed to a 11.00 index instead of a 11.60 index due to the conflict with street heat. As for the pro tree that is what NOPI and NHRA run in some of there classes and if some of you want to go fast you will be racing on a tree like that someday, plus going from a .400 tree to a .500 you should kill on R/T after you run with IMSM.

I am not trying to be a dick but there is a saying when it comes to racing "you have to pay to play" and if you want to run with the faster crowd you have to pay. Street Fighter may be a bracket class but its the most competitive class we have. The past 2 seasons the championship has come down to the final round of the final race and each time the champion only won by a mear 10pts. Street Intimidator our 12.50 class was the closest heads up class we had last year. We had mustangs and camaros getting beat out by slightly modded SRT's and EVO's.

As for heads up index what times do you want to see a heads up 13.00, 13.50, 14.00, 14.50?? we have I think room for one more class so maybe a slower index may work for some of the lightly modded cars out there. But if we do it it will be on a .400 tree and not a .500 tree. Just need to know what some people would like to see from us. We cant please everyone so if you dont fit into something heads up then sorry its just the way the crowd is going with us right now but with it still being the off season we can still change a few things around until we make it all final here within the next month or so.

I look forward to seeing some of you out there in 07 and hope that the IMSM Racing Series can offer you a place to race and compete for a chamionship and respect.

Thanks
Ross

i just race to have fun. points dont really matter to me, right now my car goes 15.3 n/a and its consistent the few times ive been to the track. i just seem to have more fun going to a friday fun night or a midnight mayhem and just screwing around having fun than trying to be perfect. and when i do screw up then oh well try again next run. meh it looks like a lot of those dates are on the same day as auto x so you can guess where ill be

Mike, I won't take you up on that bet! If I needed to work on a Pro tree though, practice in advance won't be a problem. I have a handheld practice tree, and a Biondo larger unit at home (with a clutch release pedal to make it more accurate for a 5-speed launch), and I can set them up for a Pro Tree start. If you practice anything enough, you can get good at it!

I guess all the FWD cars would lump in there, and enjoy racing the Summit Series "street" class cars. I was looking at it from that perspective.

Yes, there are some pretty darn good racers in the "Street Class" from the Summit Super Series at GLD, but that shouldn't scare anyone away. Noone is so good that they are unbeatable every time. New blood is what has made that class get better, and most racers with at least some experience, and good skills can compete.

Ross, I understand that it is really tough to come up with classes for an event. It isn't possible to please everyone with classes no matter what you do. A slower (either 14.00 or 14.50 index) class would appeal to me personally, and would appeal to other lightly modded cars, I would think. Maybe you guys could poll participants at this year's events, and try it the following year (or better yet, poll now, and implement for '07). I will definitely try to make at least a couple of these.

looks like we may be adding a 13.00 heads up index class for 2007. We are looking at maybe getting rid of a class that had a low attendace last year. We added 5 new classes last year and one of them only had a few cars show up so we combined that class with another for a better car count in 07.

We will have all of our info posted here with the next couple of weeks. Still wating on a couple of tracks for final dates on the races.

Thanks
