what car would you reccomend for a beginner autocrosser, i plan on using my j to start of with, but once i get good enough to require upgrades to my car i think i would rather put the money into a different car. something that has more potential. or at the very least something that would be easier to acheive the potential it has.
Pick a class you might want to compete in, then look at Nationals results and see which cars are up front and buy one of those. If you're looking at a stock class, you will usually have to be in a car built in the last 5 years or so to have any shot.

Miata for good cheap fun. FWD sucks. If you don't mind doing a little more suspension work to get the same results to avoid driving a girly car (as we all know the Miata is) get 240SX.
It's oh so cheesey!
got to go with the miata. there well balanced

If you want to win:
STS - 89, or 88 can't remember. Civic Hatch search the net the perfect build is out there and was written by a National Winner.
GS - Mini Cooper S (look to see me sporting one of these by next year when my sunfire is paid off).
HS - Mini Cooper non-S (seeing a pattern here)
CS - views are mixed right now
BS - RX-8
STU, SM - Lancer Evolution
Thats all I can think of off the top of my head. Check the SCCA website for national results and you'll see consistent patters for top cars.
