What fuel would create a sweet exhuast smell??
Monday, May 14, 2007 4:05 PM
Hey,
Today at school we had our local track come out and do the strip not the street thing.

They had a drag car and as they were moving it back to the trailer it went by me and it had a sweet exhaust smell.

Any idea what it would be???

It had a nitrous bottle on it but other than that I don't know much about it.

Thanks

-Seth

That sweet smell was racing fuel, and it is very expensive, up to $8 a gallon, and most aren't street legal. You need a lot of mods to justify the cost of it, a ton of boost, or a high compression ratio.

they had a news story here in buffalo yesterday about this guy who owns a restaurant, he uses his used grease/oil from the fryers to make his own bio-diesel fuel. he said it smells like french fries/donuts, lol

C16 and 110 in the right motors have an amazing smell.

Of course nothing beats the smell and burn, literally, of a nitro car nearby

Also they now make perfume for your motor. Local speed shop has these bottles. You por it in your gas tank and it has different smells. Example watermelon.

or it could just have been burning coolant

I've heard of the scents that you can add to fuel..... its been out for quite a few years. You can get it from Summit or Jegs, or probably any race shop....... cherries, watermelon, grape, vanilla........ you name it.

Chances are it was alcohol or methanol. Both of those smell quite sweet.

C16 and 100 octane fuels don't smell too sweet to me. I would much rather the smell of alcohol.

And Ryne, Nitro is cool and definietly has a distinct smell, but it pretty much destroys my sinuses and I become blinded by tears lol.

Yeah, race gas smells like paint thinner to me. After 4 hours in the shop on the dyno, everyone looks like they need a bottle of visine.

you can do it on a gas engine. just takes a WHOLE lot more conversion, including a downgrade to carburator

Those smells are also contributed by the fact they dont run catalytic converters either. They cut down the exhaust gas odor a ton.

If you want the smell of an alcohol dragster running w/ nitromethane just go buy any modern gas powered, hobby class radio control cars or trucks. run 30% nitro and voila...there you have it. Burning eyes ,nostrils and all.

I have three.
